Aluminum Access Panel Frame

  • Overall Part Dimensions Length: 6.500" Width: 6.500"
  • Material Used ± 0.002"/ 0.25°
  • Material Finish 6061-T651 QQ-A-250/11 Aluminum Plate; 1-½" Thick
APM was approached by a client in the Communications Industry for engineering and machining of a unique part. It was an aluminum access panel frame that would be a component of a military communications application. This multistep process required close tolerance surface contouring and expert CNC machine programming capabilities.
The access panel frame's production process was engineered to conform to the customer specifications. State-of-the-art CAM software was used for efficient programming of the precision Mori-Seiki Duravertical 5100 vertical machining center. Rough machining and finish 3D surface milling were completed in two steps. Made from 1" thick 6061-T651 QQ-A-25011 aluminum plate, the machined piece measured 6.500" long by 6.500" wide. Plating the aluminum with a chemical conversion coating increased its corrosion resistance. Installing thread inserts completed the assembly.
Various quality measures were utilized including in-process dimensional inspection, first article inspection reports per AS9102, and post production CMM inspection. These advanced quality capabilities verified that the required .002" .25 tolerances were met. This project also met geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5M-1982.

CNC Milling Of A Precision Aluminum Part

  • Tightest Tolerances ± 0.0005"
  • Material Used 6061-T6 Aluminum
  • Material Finish Machined/Raw
A client in the printinglabeling industry was in need of a precision aluminum part. Actually a label applicator arm for a packaging machine. They turned to APM to take advantage of our expert machining services. This challenging project required multiple machining set ups and processes.
Partnering with the client on development and product design, fabrication of this aluminum part involved engineering and programming the machining processes using state of the art CAM software that maximized quality and efficiency. Utilizing an CNC OKK VM5-III vertical machining center, 6061-T6 aluminum was milled to final dimensions of 18" 22" in length, 6" high, and 1" wide. The aluminum arm also underwent an anodizing process to increase corrosion and wear resistance.
To confirm that all specifications were met, quality measures such as functionality testing and dimensional inspections were performed. These quality capabilities verified that the required .0005" tolerances were met.

Hydraulic Fluid Filter Machining

  • Tightest Tolerances 6.25” Length x 1.90” Wide x 1.50” Thick
  • Material Used ± 0.001”
  • Material Finish 4130 Alloy Steel
PM was asked to create a hydraulic fluid filter and distribution manifold kits for maintenance use on commercial airlines. We came through for this customer by producing a complex assembly using our engineering, precision machining and finishing services. These kits would need to be manufactured to high standards of quality due to their role in the maintenance of an airliners hydraulic control system.
Our work started with engineering and the selection of high strength 4130 alloy steel for the kit. To preserve accuracy in the fabrication process, CNC machining methods includied milling, turning, drilling, deep drilling, threading, porting and finishing. Our equipment included a CNC turning center, a CNC vertical machining center and an automatic saw. This combination of cutting-edge methods and high quality material allowed us to achieve tolerances of 0.001 on the 6.25 x 1.90 x 1.50 part. Subsequent electroless nickel plating provided an excellent finish and rust protection.
Production of each kit was followed by a thorough dimensional inspection that incorporated thread and port gages. Orders of 25 50 pieces were delivered with 4 to 6 week lead times. Through our high accuracy production and an engineering team capable of processing highly complex designs, APM delivered this durable, reliable and high performance product.
