Military Use Carbon Steel

Carbon steel is a strong alloy that can be used in many different fields for various purposes. This metal alloy is a fusion of both iron and carbon. Depending on the levels of carbon used during the process, carbon steel can be used for everything from building fences to massive pipes. There is no minimum content required for carbon steel. This means that any amount of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, cobalt or any other material can be added in various amounts for the desired effect. The flexibility of this metal alloy is what makes it ideal for military use. Types of Carbon Steel Carbon steel can be alloyed at various grades for particular needs. The percentage of carbon in the alloy can range from zero to two percent. These incremental differences can transform a stiff, hardened alloy, into an easily casted, malleable carbon steel sheet. Low-Carbon Steels A low-carbon steel cannot contain any more than 0.3 percent carbon. Also referred to as wrought iron, the low amounts of carbon allow it be very versatile. Military uses of low-carbon steel can include: Vehicle body parts Railings Gates Fences Tin Plates Low-carbon steels can have incredibly low carbon content levels, reaching as low as 0.08 percent. This allows it be forged into various tools of various consistencies. Medium-Carbon Steels Medium-carbon steels are the most popular type of carbon steel and have a carbon content range from 0.3 to 0.6 percent. These steels are most used for structural purposes such as buildings and bridges. Other uses of this alloy are for: Axles Shafts Gears This popular type of carbon steel can also be found in refrigerators and automobiles. High-Carbon Steels While this type of carbon can become very hard through heat treatments, it has the reputation of being very brittle. High-carbon steels are most commonly used for: Knives Spring material Bayonets Sturdy wires This malleable and ductile alloy is cheap and can be easily formed, which makes up for its brittle nature. Ultrahigh-Carbon Steels Ultrahigh-carbon steels are the strongest of all of the grades of carbon steel with a carbon content range of 1.25 to 2.0 percent. While this is the strongest, it is the most brittle and needs to be handled with an extremely high level of care.
