Barnes Industries, Inc. is the industry leader for best delivery of new precision ground, semi-precision and commercial grade ball screws with internal or external ball return systems. (Go to the Resources tab and “How a Ball Screw Works” for more information on internal or external return systems.)
Barnes Industries specializes in emergency ball screw services that will reduce a customer’s machine downtime to an absolute minimum. Sometimes electronic malfunctions or operator error can wreck a ball screw rendering a critical machine tool inoperable. When emergencies like this happen, there are some critical steps that need to happen to protect the ball screw and possibly salvage what is left. When a screw has been wrecked and the ball nut has run into an end journal, a dog stop, or bearing housing; First, DO NOT operate the machine. Any attempt to rotate the ball screw could cause severe damage in the form of ball skidding, brinelling or return system failure, and the ball nut could seize on the screw. Operation of the machine with the nut seized up on the ball screw causes the balls to skid, damaging the screw thread raceway possibly beyond repair and further damage will also occur in the ball return system. If the screw is bent, it can be straightened. If the journal is broken, it can be replaced. If the v-threads are stripped, they can be welded and reground back to original condition. If the bearing diameter is damaged or scored, it can be chromed and reground. Do not attempt to disassemble the ball nut from the screw. Remove all end bearings, seals & drive coupling.
