The plastic resin industry produces resins which are further treated in plastics processing facilities and sold largely to the packaging, building and construction, and consumer markets. Specific product formulations and manufacturing parameters are often kept as trade secrets since the competitiveness of many companies depends on the ability to produce resins with different physical characteristics, such as strength, toughness, and flexibility.

ABS is an amorphous thermoplastic blend (copolymer) of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene and one of the most widely used thermoplastics today. ABS provides excellent surface appearance, strength and stiffness, toughness and chemical resistance, as well as its processing ease and versatility.

High Density Polyethylene is a petroleum-based thermoplastic that is wear resistant and can have very high elongation before breaking. It is generally chemically resistant and can withstand rather high temperatures (120 Celsius for short periods).

Acrylic (PMMA) (polymethyl methacrylate) is both a thermoplastic and transparent plastic. Two of the most common brand names are Plexiglass and Lucite and it is also commonly known as acrylic glass, acrylic, perspex or plexiglas. It is often used as an alternative to glass and is preferred for many applications because of its moderate properties, easy handling, easy processing and low cost. However, acrylic is not recommended for use in structural applications because of its poor impact resistance.

There are many types of nylons commercially available. The combination of versatility, value, and mechanical performance makes it one of the most frequently used plastics today. Developed in 1935 as a synthetic replacement for silk when silk became scare during World War II. It is still used today in many of those same applications.

Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) is an important and popular polymer because of its resistance to heat, acids, alkalis, mildew, bleaches, aging, sunlight, and abrasions. Because of its inherent flame retardancy, PPS is ideal for high temperature electrical applications. Because of its low viscosity, PPS can be molded with high loading of fillers and reinforcements, which is needed to compensate for its inherent brittleness. However, fillers and reinforcements can also increase strength, surface properties, dimensional stability, electrical properties, and overall cost.
