3D Molecular Designs™. Interact with and model the central dogma using this powerful simulation. Kit comes with durable color-coded foam nucleotides, tRNAs, placemats, and more, which allow students to model DNA replication, transcription of DNA into RNA, and translation of RNA into proteins. Addresses challenging concepts such as DNA strand directionality, anti-parallel structure, leadinglagging strands, and implications of encoded proteins due to changes in the DNA code. Demonstrates the structural differences between RNADNA and model the flow of genetic information from DNA to RNA to proteins. Teacher Notes (an activity guide) can enhance student understanding of the central dogma, and student handouts can supplement or reinforce concepts presented in the classroom; both are available online in PDF.
3D Molecular Designs™. Don’t tell your students about membranes and how or why they form—let them discover the spontaneous formation of membranes for themselves. This kit features the amphipathic structure of phospholipids, with their hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails. Students explore the chemical structure of a phospholipid and then construct a phospholipid monolayer, a micelle, and a bilayer, leading to an understanding of the plasma membrane structure. Additional kit components allow students to construct lipid bilayers and consider the role of transport proteins in moving ions and small molecules across membranes. Teacher Notes (an activity guide) help you consider different ways to use the kit materials, and student handouts can supplement or reinforce concepts presented in the classroom; both are available online in PDF.
The 2 premium-grade aluminum alloy tuning forks in this set are mounted on a solid walnut cavity. Each cavity is calibrated to the tuning fork’s individual frequency, and the cavity delivers clear, audible tones. Tuning forks are tuned within 0.5% @ 20° C of their frequency. Use this set of high-quality resonators to demonstrate the principle of acoustical resonance and audible beats. When you place the openings close to each other and strike only 1 tuning fork, the other fork will vibrate sympathetically (C-256 Hz). To demonstrate beats, slide the weight of the adjustable tuning fork to change the frequency. Includes a rubber mallet and instructions. Minor assembly required.
With the Carolina™ Compact Thermal Cycler, you don’t need to sacrifice quality and programmability to get a low throughput, cost-effective unit. Perfect for small labs and educational facilities, this cycler features a full-color touch screen with programming features typically found only on larger units. The user interface is exceptionally easy to navigate. A low thermal mass block allows for fast, uniform cycling. Just over 6” wide (15.7 cm), the cycler requires very little bench space. Program functions include time and temperature incrementdecrement, pause, skip, and resume after power failure. Two-year warranty.
Owl pellets are masses of undigested parts of food that owl species occasionally regurgitate. The contents of the owl pellet depends on its diet, but can include the exoskeletons of insects, indigestible plant matter, bones, fur, feathers, bills, claws, and teeth.
A Harbottle is a flat-bottomed glass sphere with 2 openings. The hole on top is open while the hole on the bottom is stoppered. So how can a balloon remain inflated in a Harbottle without the balloon end being tied? With this demo, challenge your students’ prior knowledge or use as an engaging topic review on air pressure. Includes a 1, 000-mL glass Harbottle, rubber stopper, balloon, and instructions.
