At Centerless Grinding Service, we are a trusted industrial resource for high precision bar materials. For this project, a customer in the power generation industry contracted with us to grind, polish, and precision straighten 17, 200 lbs of 24' long 410 HT stainless steel bar and prepare it for international shipment. From the receipt of material and throughout all of the processing, up to and including packaging for export, real-time inspections conducted by on-site client representatives ensured we adhered to all industrial codes and compliance mandates.
Because of our many years of consistent performance, a client in the marine industry contracted with us at Centerless Grinding Service to grind, polish, and straighten a pair of stainless steel propeller shafts. Precision finishing of a propeller shaft is critical to its performance, as even the slightest flaw could cause the shaft to rotate off-center and produce unwanted vibration. Constructed from high strength 17-4 stainless steel and measuring 32' length, finishing these shafts was a challenging task.

Known for our high standards for precision, quality, and service, an OEM in the heavy equipment industry contracted with Centerless Grinding Service to grind and polish a large volume of critical oil pump shafts. With our solid understanding the fundamentals of centerless grinding and methods to grind hardened and non-standard material grades, we identified the thru-feed grinding processes that were the most efficient means for getting this job completed accurately and quickly. With a before-grind diameter of 0.8770" and a finish diameter specified at 0.8748", this project required precise control of material removal rates. This enabled us to achieve outstanding roundness, a surface finish of 16 RMS max, and a consistently close +0.000-0.0004" dimensional tolerances end to end. We used special packaging to ensure all 5, 150 pieces arrived in pristine condition at the client's assembly plant. The entire project took us less than two weeks to complete.
At Centerless Grinding Service, we have the production capacity to process jobs within narrow timelines to keep up with any busy shop's inventory requirements and production flows. This project involved grinding and straightening 42, 520 lbs of 12L14 carbon steel bar for a customer in the automotive industry. Incoming material inspections revealed that the material was shipped to us with an outer diameter of 0.406". In addition to straightening the bar to 0.006" T.I.R per foot of length, we ground the diameter to 0.398" within close +0.000- 0.001" tolerances while achieving a 32 RMS surface finish. We also chamfered the ends of each 12’ length of material per the client specifications.
At Centerless Grinding Services, we have a team of skilled operators with a strong background in working with all different types of metal. This particular job involved cutting-to-length and grinding of small diameter brass rods targeted for use in a research & development project at a leading University. With incoming rods measuring 0.250" in diameter and a finish diameter requirement of 0.187", our economical approach consisted of using a rough grinding process to get the diameter closer to size. Once adequate stock was removed, we cut the work pieces to 7.5" ±0.010" lengths, precision straightened them to a T.I.R. value of 0.010" along the entire length, and finish ground them to size with close dimensional tolerances of +0.000-0.0004" on the diameter. The technical competencies of our workforce combined with state-of-the-art grinding equipment allowed us achieve this high degree of accuracy on all 6, 250 units in this order. Final operations consisted of polishing the rods and packaging them for shipment.
