USB Type-C is the new USB-IF standard that solves several challenges faced by today's Type-A and Type-B cables and connectors. USB Type-C uses a slimmer connector (measuring only 2.4-mm in height) to allow for increasing miniaturization of consumer and industrial products. The USB Type-C standard is gaining rapid support by enabling small form-factor, easy-to-use connectors and cables with the ability to transmit multiple protocols and offer power delivery up to 100 W a significant improvement over the 7.5 W for previous standards.

With the SIMPLIS simulator, this online design support tool enables power circuit designers to automatically select suitable parts for the printed circuit board according to the inputoutput voltage and load current parameters. PRoC BLE and PSoC 4 BLE

PRoC BLE (Programmable-Radio-on-Chip with BLE) and PSoC 4 BLE (Programmable System-On-Chip with BLE) are ARM Cortex-M0-based SoC families that offer more integration compared to the WICED SMART SoCs. PRoC BLE includes on-chip Flash (up to 256 KB) and an optional CapSense controller for touch sensing with up to 2-finger gestures. PSoC 4 BLE offers adds mixed-signal integration with opamps, low-power comparators and Cypress's unique Universal Digital Blocks (UDBs). These families are supported on Cypress's PSoC Creator IDE.

PMIC Energy Harvesting

What is Energy Harvesting?

Energy harvesting is the process by which energy is derived from external sources (e.g. solar or light energy, thermal energy, and kinetic energy) and stored for small, wireless autonomous devices like those used in Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSNs).

Energy Harvesting Devices (EHDs) provide a very small amount of power for low-energy electronics. Solar modules are the most popular EHDs, since they are readily available, easy to use and low cost. The power generated is proportional to the the size of module and varies with brightness. Piezoelectric and electromagnetic EHDs generate AC power from kinetic energy such as vibration. They can generate large amounts of power with high voltage, but the challenge for these EHDs is to provide a vibration source of constant predictable frequency. Because of this, a typical application for a vibration EHD is attaching to a motor. A thermoelectric generator (TEG) can generate power with high current from heat. Similar to the vibration EHD, you have to ensure a constant temperature gradient for this device to provide usable power.

Energy Harvesting Power Management IC (PMIC)

An Energy Harvesting PMIC is part of an Energy Harvesting System (EHS) that includes the EHD and a Storage Device. The PMIC receives the intermittent, very low-energy generated by the EHD and transforms that energy for storage in the Storage Device. The Storage Device, which is typically a battery, conventional capacitor, or supercapacitor, then is connected to the rest of the system, providing the power needed to operate.

Cypresss Automotive PMIC solutions are designed to meet the needs of modern ECUs. They are very compact, and are able to tolerate extreme battery voltage fluctuations while providing stable and reliable power. They extend battery life due to their low quiescent current consumption, and they offer features that support System Safety Functions that protect ECU electronics against harsh conditions.

Compact, Low-power, Highly Integrated Automotive Power Management Solution

Industry-leading compact solution

Start-stop systems, along with Load Dump and Cold Cranking conditions, cause extreme battery voltage transients below the voltage that electronic ICs typically utilize. This forces traditional buck type PMICs to use a pre-conditioning filter with bulky, expensive electrolytic capacitors. Cypresss Automotive PMICs are buck-boost type PMICs that dont require electrolytic capacitors. Furthermore, they integrate external components such as switching transistors, output voltage setting resistors, and phase compensation circuits. So you get a power management solution that reduces BOM and easily fits into small systems.

Tolerate extreme battery voltage fluctuations with stable and reliable power

Automobile battery voltages can vary from 3 volts up to 35 volts as specified in ISO16750-2. Cypresss Automotive PMICs tolerate these voltages, while providing stable and reliable power with minimal undershoot and overshoot.

Extend battery life

"Always-on" functions such as keyless entry must continuously operate while the engine is off. Cypresss Automotive PMICs consume very little power on standby and is extremely battery-friendly.

Support System Safety Functions

ECUs are now used for critical systems. They must be protected against harsh thermal and electrical conditions to ensure proper operation. Cypress Automotive PMICs support System Safety Functions by providing input voltage supervisors, output voltagecurrent supervisors, thermal management, and watch-dog timers to protect ECUs from damage and erroneous operation.
