Diamond Tool & Mold does a healthy amount of rubber mold manufacturing for its business. Consequently, we know what we're talking about when we say we can take materials as diverse as tool steel, pre-hardened mold steel, and stainless steel, and convert them into components such as core and cavity molds, in addition to holding plates and core pins. Through precise application of such processes as milling, turning, grinding, sinker EDM, fitting, heat treatment, plating, coating, and welding, we can configure components with maximum lengths of 60" and maximum widths of 30". Our 3D machining capabilities allow for .0005" and .0002" machining and grinding tolerances, respectively. All of our capabilities amount to impressive end results: the generation of compression, transfer, and liner rubber mold types that meet the highest expectations our customers have. From prototype to lean production, we serve industries as widespread as automotive, appliance, aerospace, medical, industrial, construction, and agricultural. We can create cavities numbering anywhere between 1 and 150 for rubber or metal-bonded seals. We also have the ability to repair rubber molds that our customers bring to us. Any certification that's required, we'll ably meet, whether the product desired is a prototype or production. . We here at Diamond Mold & Tool know a thing or two when it comes to turning of core, cavity, coin ring and punches. Using either a CNC lathe or a conventional lathe, we can fine-craft cores, cavities, forms, punches, and coin rings into works of industrial art. Whether the basic material we're working with is tool steel, pre-hardened mold steel, andor stainless steel, the result will be a prototype or product that's bottom-line sturdy and reliantly functional. Our processes include milling, turning, grinding, sinker EDM, fitting, heat treatment, plating, coating, and welding. Our equipment controls range from manual to full-on CNC. Additionally, we operate 3D milling capabilities as far as machinery axes, so that our machining tolerances are (+-).0005". And our customers - anyone including automotive, appliance, aerospace, medical, industrial, construction, and agricultural clients - love our consistent handiwork and turnaround times of 1-8 weeks (rush services are indeed available). Customers in many industries count on the expertise of Diamond Tool & Mold to fabricate custom molds that meet the exacting quality demands of their production operations. We produced this core and cavity mold for a customer in the agriculture industry. It features a 7-part design to optimize production of plastic liners used in cow milking equipment. Materials of construction included 4140 pre-hardened steel for the sprue cap, Nak-55 for the core, and 440 hard stainless for the remaining 5 components. Working from customer-supplied drawings, we utilized our computerized CNC turning and milling equipment, as well as our precision wire EDM machine, to form the intricate geometries of each component. Secondary operations consisted of heat treating to impart the required hardness, grinding the surface to a high quality and dimensionally accurate finish, etching to apply the markings, and fitting the core. We shipped 20 of these multi-component, single cavity molds, which featured overall dimensions of 3" in diameter and 12.5" height, to the customer within a 10-12 week time frame. Our skilled, precision craftsmanship enabled us to provide them with high quality tooling that would benefit their process efficiency and deliver a long service life. Diamond Tool & Mold has an industry-wide reputation for our ability to design and fabricate molding that streamlines production for specialized applications. We produced the mold assembly pictured here for a customer in the automotive industry. It is designed for use in a rubber-to-metal bonding process for high-volume manufacturing of transmission seals. Our engineers worked closely with the customer to define both the part and production requirements. They created 2D drawings and 3D models for this 46 cavity mold assembly to simulate and fine-tune its functionality. We specified three grades of steel for the various components, including 4140-PH for the plate assemblies to ensure a high degree of flatness, and 440 stainless for the inserts due to its superior edge retention. Operations consisted of both CNC and EDM machining, heat treating, and finish grinding the components to within extremely precise +0.0005"-0.0000" dimensional tolerances while maintaining roundness, concentricity, flatness, and parallelism within 0.001" T.I.R. In addition, we polished the cavity area to a 16 RMS finish, leaving no visible scratches or tool marks. Measuring 35.440" x 32.000" x 7.264", we designed and fabricated this mold assembly with complete geometric precision, guaranteeing the integrity of our customer's component parts. A customer in the automotive industry approached Diamond Tool & Mold to evaluate an existing mold that was showing significant wear and had become unusable for production. Used in the fabrication of truck bed bolt covers, we engineered design modifications and made the repairs to restore the mold to production status, where it would provide many more years of continued service. Our expert craftsmen used a variety of materials, including 4130 pre-hardened steel for the base, #7 steel for the core, and H13 tool steel for the cavity. To execute the modifications and replace completely worn parts, we utilized a variety of CNC and EDM machining equipment and techniques. Additional operations consisted of heat treating to add strength and grinding the core to a standard finish and the cavity with a textured finish. We fitted the components of this 24 x 36 assembly, and then produced sample parts to validate the integrity of the restored mold. Our ability to tune up and rejuvenate this mold enabled the customer to save the significant expense of new tooling. If you have a mold that is obsolete, worn, or not in service, contact us for an evaluation, our design and repair experts may be able to give it a whole new life.
Our more than 30 years experience meeting the highly specific needs of the automotive industry made Diamond Tool & Mold the perfect choice for the design and fabrication of this mold for a rubber-to-metal bonding application. We designed the 24" x 24", 22-cavity mold with a precise balance between the cavities to eliminate trapped gases that could weaken the bond and cause part failure. The optimized runner sizes ensure the proper flow of rubber through the mold so that components are produced exactly to specification. This project involved various materials of construction, including wear resistant S7 steel for the slides, hardened 440 steel for the core, and pre-hardened, dimensionally stable 4130 for the mold plates. Using these materials ensures that the mold will operate reliably over millions of production cycles. Operations consisted of multiple machining techniques executed on our precision CNC milling and grinding equipment, as well as fine finishing on our wire EDM equipment. Sample parts produced on our in-house machines ensured the dimensional integrity of this complex mold. We designed and built this mold within the 8 week turnaround the customer requested. Its precision fabrication enables the customer to achieve tight, automotive industry tolerances on their component parts. The mold geometry enables the formation of a 100% reliable rubber-to-metal seal for an industry where part failure is not an option.
