Integral starter generators that range in power from 5kW to 200kW and operate at speeds up to 60, 000 RPM. EAI has developed units under contracts from both the US Army Research Laboratory and Air Force Research Laboratory. These generators operate in high temperature environments and provide engine start function as well. High temperature insulation schemes are employed. EAI’s 2.5 MW generator was designed for aerospace applications. Innovative techniques for the electromagnetic and thermal design of the 2.5 MW generator were applied and the design can be scaled from 1.0 to 5.0 MW. The main generator design utilizes wound field synchronous machine technology and incorporates a brushless DC exciter. Additional information for the 2.5 MW generator is available upon request.

EAI has designed an AC+DC generator suitable for aircraft applications. The generator is a variable speed machine with a nominal speed of 8000 rpm. It provides a 28V DC output with a nominal rating of 400A, and a 115 200 V, three-phase output with a nominal rating of 5 kVA and a power factor of 0.7 to 1. This is a compact generator with the capability of eliminating the need for external inverters to provide AC power on helicopters. This helps improve the power density, efficiency, and reliability of the electric power system on helicopters. A controller to provide independent voltage regulation for the AC and DC power as well as protective functions is also designed. The 100 kW Dual Starter Generator is an innovative solution for applications that require a starter generator that provides high power density, high efficiency and high reliability. EAI utilized induction machine technology for the design of the Dual Starter Generator which provides both DC power and mechanical power for engine start. The starter generator has two isolated output channels that are each rated for continuous operation at 100kW and 270VDC.

Developed under contract from the U.S. Army TACOM, the motor is of a pancake type design with water-cooled stators. The controller design is based on hysteretic switching of input current. Water cooled power IGBTs have control signals transmitted via fiber optic cables to prevent adverse effects of electrical interference. Breadboard assembly and tests with partial loads have been completed.
