Elge Precision Machining, Inc. is periodically asked to produce high volumes of stainless steel knurled pins. With almost 70 years of experience, Elge’s knowledge of turning and knurling enables us to increase cycle times while maintaining quality standards, which results in reduced costs and savings to the end user. Elge produces these stainless steel knurled pins—which are used in automotive, electronics, industrial, construction, and OEM applications—on 11 Davenport automatic screw machines. Made from 303 stainless steel, the pins have outside diameters ranging from 532” to ¾” and lengths from ¼” to 12”. Working from customer specifications and 2D CAD drawings, Multi-Spindle screw machining is used to manufacture the pins to tight tolerances of ±0.001”. After being cleaned with solvent, the parts are dried for inspection. Following dimensional and visual inspection, the stainless steel knurled pins are tagged and dated to a specific screw machine and manufacture date. Documentation provided to customers includes certificates of conformance and material certifications. Elge Precision Machining has produced anywhere from 2, 500 to 1, 000, 000 of these stainless steel knurled pins in a variety of sizes. Delivery is typically accomplished in only two weeks following the start of production. Stocking programs are also available for larger orders.

Elge Precision Machining, Inc. was contracted by an electronic parts manufacturer in need of a reliable manufacturer for aluminum knurled knobs. Used within a custom application, these knobs needed to be produced accurately and economically in large volumes. We decided that a screw machining approach would be best for satisfying these goals. Our single spindle Brown & Sharpe screw machines were retained for production of the knobs. Individual fabrication processes included rough turning, drilling, form turning, counter boring, trepanning, thread rolling, and knurling. 6061-T6 Aluminum was specified as the build material. Tolerances were held at ±0.001”, with 32 RMS finishing placed on most surfaces. All completed parts were subject to dimensional and fit tests before being individually packaged and shipped out on lead times of 4-5 weeks.

At Elge Precision Machining, Inc., we have a history of providing custom made, high precision machined parts for a diverse variety of applications. When a theater artist from New York City called with an idea for a prop that involved multiple aluminum components and assemblies, we were pleased to take on the contract. When assembled, the components needed to hold and help carry a custom serving platform used in one of the play’s scenes. The table platform is used to carry various stage props during the play’s production. SolutionResults: The play’s production and building department provided ELGE Precision with a sketched drawing. We were given total creative design on the project. Our programmer’s broke down the various parts and designated part numbers. We then made specific drawings and presented them to the art director for verification of form and function. Timing was critical, and with the print delivered Friday evening, we were given a one week deadline. Our CNC department took the challenge head-on, and started to produce the 10 different components for the project. One by one, the parts took form and we sent videos and pictures to our client every day to show our progress. The art director was amazed at the accuracy, timeliness, finish and overall quality of our finished project. We were told that we “saved the day, ” and now we are proud to say that our CNC machining work is playing a featured role on Broadway.
