The Ultra-High Power Density Battery Solution FlexEl designed and delivered a battery capable of producing the required burst power. The solution has better shelf life, uses an alkaline chemistry that does not require safety electronics, and is lower in cost than the lithium-polymer alternative. The technology uses proven chemicals, parts and manufacturing techniques so that production scale-up is readily managed. Potential Application Cosmetic applicators, disposable high-power sensortransmitters, drug-delivery nebulizers, hair remover, ultra-fast photoflash, just to name a few. Status The technology can be sampled as a smaller than AAAA (LR61) battery to qualified customers. Custom dimensions can be developed relatively quickly. The Challenge Many OEM companies are seeking cheaper, safer disposable or rechargeable power solutions as alternative to Lithium-Ion or Lithium-Polymer, while providing shape and form factor freedom away from cylindrical types. Do you need a microbattery that is the size of a grain of rice, or on same order as a human hair? Do you need this in an odd geometry - maybe curved or S shaped, or plain straight. We have solved this challenge before. The Challenge A major OEM has a goal of developing a disposable consumer product incorporating a bio-compatible micro-battery. The device has to operate in contact with human tissues and fluids. The battery targets included to support device operation for a full day, fit in a miniature non-linear cavity and be completely bio-compatible with human tissues. The OEM had spent considerable time developing the device and searching for a power solution. After several attempts to find a battery partner able to develop such unique product, and failing to develop it in-house, this OEM eventually connected with FlexEl.

A major OEM had a goal of developing a disposable consumer product incorporating a small, ultra-high power density battery. The battery targets included supporting very high burst of power events (~2.5Watts) hundreds of times at high operating voltage in a smaller than AAAA (LR61) cylindrical form factor. The OEM had spent considerable time evaluating and experimenting with lithium-polymer technology. Those battery solutions suffered from several drawbacks: Battery shelf life was too short, meaning that their product would have to be charged by the consumer prior to use, thereby dramatically affecting the user experience, Power solution was expensive; the battery cost was high, and in addition they had to add costly safety electronics, further increasing device cost. Lithium-polymer human and environmental safety was a significant concern for the OEM related to the risk of sudden battery ignition or violent disassembly.
