TA-530 combines high strength and thermal shock resistance yielding a versatile alumina product that is suitable in a wide variety of applications. TA-540 is a modified version of TA-530 that is best suited for miscellaneous kiln furniture. The higher content aluminas are excellent for use when silica content is critical. TA-505 is suitable for induction melting under vacuum due to a lower silica content while retaining thermal shock resistance. TA-507 is excellent for use in vacuum or hydrogen atmospheres due to the lowered silica content. TA-510F is preferred in hydrogen or vacuum atmospheres and has excellent strength at elevated temperatures.

Insulating Fire Bricks

  • Density 36 lb/ft³
  • Maximum Operating Temperature 2300 ºF 1260 ºC
  • Cold Crushing Strength 330 psi 2.28 MPa
  • Modulus of Rupture 450 psi 3.10 MPa
Foundry Service supplies Insulating Fire Brick (IFB) for use in applications from 2300F (1100C) to 3200F (1760C). Each type is formulated to meet specific thermal and physical requirements, and after firing is machined to precise tolerances. Made from high purity refractory clays and other ceramic raw materials, these IFB contain carefully graded organic filler which is burned out during manufacture to give a uniform, controlled pore structure. Standard sizes are 9" x 4.5" x 2.5" and 9" x 4.5" x 3", but custom sizes up to 24" x 9" x 3" can be produced without any cemented joints. Thicknesses up to 4 12", along with widths up to 12", allow a range of shapes and sizes for applications such as suspended roof modules. In addition to standard shapes including arches, wedges, soaps and splits, fabricated bricks are also available in special cemented or machined shapes. A large machine shop at the factory is capable of supplying accurate machined shapes of nearly any description. The unique large slab means that a finished shape will have fewer joints than shapes made from any other IFB manufacturer. IFB shapes with drilled holes, grooves, flycuts, tapers, radii cuts, skew planes, tongue and groove, notches and chord cuts are easily fabricated in any quality IFB.

Fused Silica

  • Density 122 to 130 lb/ft³ 1.9 to 2.1 g/cm³
  • Modulus of Rupture (Room Temperature) 1000 to 1500 psi 6.9 to 10.3 MPa
  • Maximum Operating Temperature (Cycling to Room Temp.) 2400 ºF 1316 ºC
  • Maximum Operating Temperature (Cycling Above 2000ºF) 2900 ºF 1590 ºC
Fused Silica properties include good thermal shock resistance, a thermal expansion coefficient close to zero and excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures, making Fused Silica refractory components particularly useful for very demanding applications. Additional properties include chemical stability and low electrical conductivity; although it should be noted that due to its physical structure use at temperatures exceeding 1000C is not possible for cyclic applications. Despite this, the material performs well in the refractory environment, often being used in components such as firing supports, ignition crucibles and dishes.

  • Compressive Strength at 10% Deformation 1500 psi 10340 kPa
  • Flexural Strength 500 psi 3450 kPa
  • Sheet Size 48 x 96 in 1220 x 2440 mm
Metalflow, Monalite, and Ultratemp-AL are strong, machinable, non-asbestos and inorganic Calcium Silicate insulation boards specifically developed for conveying, containing, handling and forming molten aluminum and other non-ferrous metals. Made of fibers, micro silica and ahydrothermally-produced inorganic binder, they are ideal materials for conveying and controlling the flow of aluminum. Manufactured for greater life and improved machining characteristics. High heat treatment removes excess water, and minimizes shrinkage that would normally occur in service. These unique board materials have many outstanding advantages. Metals do not adhere to them, even when they cool and solidify, so skull can be easily removed. They require no foundry facing wash, and do not lead to contamination of the metals. Molten metals are conveyed with less heat loss, so stay at a more uniform temperature, and therefore can be handled at a lower temperature. Because they have a low heat capacity, preheating isn't required. They are crack and shock-resistant, and offer cost efficiency through a long service life.

Carbide

  • Classification Nitride Bonded
  • Mix Designation 66 to 68
  • Method of Manufacture Ram/Jolt
  • Maximum Service Temperature 2800 ºF
Silicon Carbide has excellent resistance to corrosion, high mechanical strength, high thermal conductivity, a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, and better thermal shock resistance than alumina at very high temperatures. Silicon carbide is composed of tetrahedra of carbon and silicon atoms with strong bonds in the crystal lattice. This produces a very hard and strong material. Silicon carbide is not attacked by any acids or alkalis or molten salts up to 800C. In air, SiC forms a protective silicon oxide coating at 1200C and is able to be used up to 1600C. The high thermal conductivity coupled with low thermal expansion and high strength give this material exceptional thermal shock resistant qualities. Silicon carbide ceramics with little or no grain boundary impurities maintain their strength to very high temperatures, approaching 1600C with no strength loss. Chemical purity, resistance to chemical attack at temperature, and strength retention at high temperatures has made this material very popular as wafer tray supports and paddles in semiconductor furnaces. The electrical conduction of the material has lead to its use in resistance heating elements for electric furnaces, and as a key component in thermistors (temperature variable resistors) and in varistors (voltage variable resistors). Other applications include seal faces, wear plates, bearings and liner tubes.
