System Layout

The typical DTS spindle system consists of a DTS spindle, a control package and an air purge unit.
The DTS spindle is generally mounted permanently on the grinding machine. The machine may be either modified to accept the given spindles hole pattern or an adapter bracket may be required. Once the mounting position of the spindle is determined, the spindle cable is routed usually to a point on the periphery of the grinding machine. The spindle cable terminates with the spindle electrical connector that is to be attached to a bulkhead connector. The bulkhead connector is led by cable to the control panel.

The control panel may be either mounted within an existing enclosure or a provided electrical enclosure. The appropriate configuration at which the spindle cable exits the spindle as well as the lengths of the spindle cable and control panel cable must be determined for each application.

The air purge unit is typically mounted on the outside of the grinding machine. Factory air is to be supplied to an air nipple extending from this unit. An air line is connected from the air purge unit to an air nipple on the spindle electrical connector. Air is able to flow from this point to the inside of the spindle through the air line inside of the spindle cable.

G II Solutions is also a reseller of diamond rolls. If it proves easier to purchase a diamond roll from us, well just include one as part of the complete package. G II Solutions, Inc. also attempts to stock a few diamond rolls that are most common in composition and form. Since most diamond roll manufactures profess at best a 4 week delivery on diamond rolls, G II Solutions can often provide the best option when a quick delivery on a diamond roll is necessary.

Standard Control Package

The standard DTS system control package features an open panel with a set of pre-wired components. With this configuration, the control panel is intended to be mounted in the interfacing machines existing electrical enclosure. Cable exits the control panel and terminates at a bulkhead connector that is generally mounted in the wall of the existing enclosure. The control package features a servo amplifier that requires a single or three phase, AC power source ranging from 90-270 volts. Also featured are a set of manual controls and an interface module for PLC or CNC interface.The interface module provides multifunctional interface between the servo amplifier and an external controller. All available features are accessible through screw terminals and connectors. Included in this module are three 24 Vdc input relays, two solid state output relays, and several functional circuits and direct connections to the complete range of functions available from the servo amplifier.

Precision Slides

G II Solutions' precision slides operate in conjunction with a DTS spindle and a CNC system. These components are used for profiling, forming, and reforming grinding wheels to a programmed shape. This forming system is necessary when the grinding wheel is a stationary unit, and the spindle must move to dress or true the grinding wheel. As are the DTS spindles, the precision slides are compact and are available in many configurations to serve almost any grinder.The slide base and saddle are machined and ground from Meehanite cast iron. Meehanite is different from ordinary cast iron. It is composed from a denser, finer grain structure, which assures casting solidity and consistency. It provides the rigidity required when implementing rotary dressing and truing techniques. Smooth motion is provided by needle roller bearings.

Slides are driven by a precision, ground, class C3 or better, preloaded ball screw and a brushless DC servomotor. An optical encoder is mounted directly on the ball screw for optimum positional control. Each axis offers positional accuracy better than 0.0001 inchinch and repeatability of +-0.00005 inch.

The CNC controller used to operate the above system may be supplied by G II Solutions or the system may be custom designed to fit the customers' CNC package. G II Solutions is an authorized systems integrator for Fagor Automation Systems and generally uses their components, unless otherwise requested.

Spindle Overview

DTS spindles operate using custom-engineered brushless DC servomotors. These units are used to drive diamond-truing rolls and are specifically intended to produce and maintain precision contours in grinding wheels.

DTS spindles are extremely rigid and precise. Spindle shafts are manufactured with A2 tool steel, hardened to 60-62 Rockwell. Shafts are supported by two duplex pairs of precision angular contact spindle bearings. These bearings are manufactured with radial runouts of 0.000050" (.0013 mm) or less.

DTS spindles are compact in size, allowing the units to fit in space constrained areas. DTS spindles are also lightweight, permitting the spindles to function as portable units.Despite the compactness of DTS spindles, they have high torque and a broad speed range. Control packages offered with DTS spindles permit the speed, direction, and enable to be selected manually, or by CNC or PLC. Commanded speeds are maintained through closed loop velocity control.

Mechanical rigidity and precision, along with consistent and precise speed control are features that make DTS spindles a viable candidate for truing the demanding super abrasive grinding wheels.

The DTS spindles operate with positive internal air pressure. By maintaining positive pressure within the unit, the DTS spindles are capable of withstanding the coolant-flooded environments of grinding machines. Clean and regulated air is supplied to the unit through the spindle cable, requiring only one connection to the spindle.

DTS spindle control packages feature servo amplifiers that are powered from a 50-60 Hz, 90-270 Vac, single-phase or three-phase power source. Custom configurations and numerous options are available to accommodate various applications on almost any grinder make or model.

Extension Cable

When the distance between the spindle and the control panel is excessive, over about 40 feet, it may be desirable to use an extension cable. This cable attaches to the spindle electrical connector on one end and to the bulkhead connector from the control panel on the other end. The standard extension cable is supplied in watertight conduit.

Most applications require a custom bracket to mount the spindle to the grinding machine. G II Solutions have developed various brackets for different spindle grinder combinations and often have the more popular combinations in stock.

Electrical Enclosure

With the standard control package, the control panel is intended to be mounted in the existing machines electrical enclosure. If un desirable or not possible, G II Solutions will provide the control panel in a stand-alone Nema 12 enclosure. With this configuration, the manual controls are relocated from the control panel to the door of the electrical enclosure. The standard configuration positions the bulkhead connector in the enclosures lower right face.

The DTS Spindle Line

he DTS line features three different types of spindles: cantilever mount style, outboard bearing support style, and removable arbor models.

Cantilever mount style models are intended for applications where the truing roll traces across the grinding wheel. These spindles can also be used for plunging applications where the grinding wheel is relatively thin.

Outboard bearing support models are required for plunge dressing and truing applications where the grinding wheel is relatively wide or for when multiple wheels are to be mounted to the spindle during a single operation.

Removable arbor type spindles are used for the same reasons as outboard support units, but offer quick change among different roll types and provide the capability for wider diamond roll widths. For each style, a variety of models are offered to accommodate a wide range of diamond roll widths and diameters and power requirements.
