Petrified wood is ancient wood that is fossilized when it is buried in sediments and chemically replaced by carbon, calcite, and or silica. The best qualities usually have a high silica (SiO₂) content take makes them after more suitable for cutting and polishing. Petrified wood comes primarily from Northern Arizona, but I supply many varieties from other locations. Private lands are usually the only sources left in the USA to collect or mine commercially anymore.

High quality golden sheen obsidian from Utah. The colors play in it is a unique chatoyancy similarly to a tigers eye stone. It is caused by nanoparticles of magnetite or hematite. Sometimes called "fire Obsidian." While these stones are smaller than some obsidian pieces out there, the golden sheen is dense in many stones and is considered the highest quality in North America.

High quality black obsidian from Utah. These form in nodules that are dense with a high luster and nice black color. Other pieces of obsidian are often not as dark black and high luster as these. Some pieces may have some fair translucency, though most pieces are moderately opaque.

Turritella Agate (Elimia agate) comes from the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming, northeastern Utah, and northwestern Colorado. Formed in deposits in an series of ancient lakes called Lake Gosiute and Lake Uinta. Lapidary pieces are highly silicified and take a nice polish.

From Utah. One of the most colorful purple rocks on Earth. Most pieces are soft and are better suited as specimens, but many pieces can also take some good polish. I have cut many fine cabs out of this material. It also holds and polishes well with epoxies. Many pieces have very fine and sparkles called druzzies.
