With four distinct production runs including its impending 2016 rebirth the Lincoln Continental was first introduced in 1939. Its inaugural fourth generation model, released in 1961, was originally intended to be the Ford Thunderbird, though the design was enlarged and slightly altered (by future Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara) to fit with the Lincoln line.
Most famously, the SS-100-X, the codename for the John F. Kennedy presidential limousine, was a 1961 Lincoln Continental convertible, the very car in which he was assassinated on November 22, 1963.
