Large fabrications can be a problem for companies that do not have the expertise or equipment to handle them, none of which is a problem for Industrial Maintenance Welding & Machining. We pride ourselves on our large fabrication skills, which were all called into play when a scrap metal customer asked us to manufacture a steel scrap shredder. Scrap metal shredders must function in an incredibly harsh environment as they reduce all kinds of metal into small pieces, and the design and manufacture of this equipment had to reflect the ruggedness of their application. We used our customer's engineering and horizontal boring mill-working from customer specifications and 2D CAD drawings-to manufacture components for the shredders, whose final dimensions were 20' wide, 24' long and 35' high, and weighed a whopping 300, 000 lbs. We then welded the 6" steel plate into the final assembly to tight tolerances of 116" before paint was applied. Dimensional and visual inspection and functionality testing were used to confirm the operation and quality of the finished shredders. Our skilled staff showed remarkable flexibility because we were required to accommodate several modifications during the construction process, which actually saved our customer three weeks of field assembly and fitment. We now assemble two to five of these steel scrap shredders per year, which takes about three to six months to complete.

Among the most complex items Industrial Maintenance Welding & Machining repairs or furnishes are hot strip mill mandrels. These mandrels are used on coilers at steel mills, which wind hot rolled steel into coils, and they must operate in very intense conditions. We work on every type of mandrel or reel, including hot strip, cold mill, sheet, tin pickle, etc. Using our horizontal boring mill and CNC lathe, we machine bronze and cast steel forgings up to 20" in diameter to exacting tolerances of ±0.001. Completed mandrels undergo dimensional and visual inspections before being shipped to our national and international customers. Working from customer specifications and 2D CAD drawings, projects of this complexity typically take us a few months to finish.

Following component fabrication, we then apply our extensive welding skills to assemble this specialized lifting equipment that in some cases is over 120" in diameter and up to 50' long. Once all fabrication and assembly is completed according to customer specifications and 2D CAD drawings, every lifting device we manufacture undergoes dimensional and visual inspections to verify quality and integrity. Experts in the field, Industrial Maintenance Welding & Machining have been repairing heavy-duty blast furnace parts for over 35 years. Our ability to carefully plan the repair process as well as our experience with these difficult repairs has combined to create a seamless transition of work between us and our customers. We use primary skills like welding and machining to repair rugged steel bells distributors, bell rods, and hoppers, all of which are used to produce iron in the steel milling process. Our large welding positioner and large vertical lathe work perfectly to repair hoppers and bells up to 22' in diameter, and bell rods up to 50' long. Steel blast furnace parts are repaired using hard surface welding wire and stainless welds, all to tolerances of ±0.001", or fits of less than 0.003" from bell to hopper. The parts are typically finished to 16 RMS in some areas before reassembly. Dimensional and visual inspections are applied to all blast furnace parts we repair for our steel mill customers from the Midwest to the East Coast. We are guided by customer specifications and 2D CAD drawings on blast furnace part repair projects like these while adhering to American Welding Society standards of D.1.1 and higher.

Industrial Maintenance Welding & Machining is known throughout the industry for our ability to fabricate and repair large equipment. Tracing its roots all the way back to the early 1970s, Industrial had to call on all its experience and customer service skills when asked to recondition a gearbox for a steel mill. The equipment was a 5-stand sheet mill gearbox that was used to control a series of five rolling mills, or stands. Using our CNC horizontal boring mill, we repaired all the bores in a single step to a tight tolerance of ±0.001". Although this giant steel gearbox was 9' long, 7' wide, and 9' high, Industrial Maintenance was easily able to maneuver it with our 80-ton lifting capacity. Finally, the steel gearbox was welded back together, painted, and underwent final visual and dimensional inspection. All repairs were done according to customer specifications and guided by a 2D CAD drawing. This large project required between four and six months to complete.

Material handling equipment in the mining industry must be ruggedly built, reliable, and designed with weight efficiency in mind for greater productivity. When the OEM needed a company to manufacture steel dipper buckets for this demanding application, they knew to turn to Industrial Maintenance Welding & Machining. Using customer supplied materials to manufacture the dipper; we used our CNC horizontal boring mill for machined bores to tight tolerances of ±0.001". Industrial's welding equipment was then called into play to join the steel, producing a mammoth bucket that was 18' long, 18' high, and 28' wide. The shell of the structure, designed with high cheeks to slice through banks of material, was ¾" thick with 1" thick liners. Once the bores and welding were completed, a final finish of paint was applied. Industrial Maintenance Welding & Machining now manufactures five to ten of these buckets a year with a deliveryturnaround time of only three months. On this particular project, Industrial Maintenance was guided by customer specifications and a 2D CAD drawing, all the while adhering to American Welding Society standards of D.1.1 and higher.
