Among die and mold manufacturers, high-speed milling of hardened tool steel is one of the most important technologies. At JB Tool, Die & Engineering, Inc. we know how important it is and have the skill and experience to tackle the most complicated high-speed CNC milling projects. With this in mind, a plastics industry client came to JB Tool & Die for a core pin constructed from 440C stainless that would be used in the making of plastic closures. Our design team created a CAD model as the basis for the manufacture of this forming pin. The process included CNC turning and machining, heat treatment and high-speed milling. We finished the 28 mm forming pin by polishing to a surface finish of 4 micro. The finished product measured 1-18" diameter and we worked within tolerances of ± .0002". JB Tool, Die & Engineering, Inc. experienced mold makers and our state of the art machinery were what a plastics industry client was looking for when in need of a mold to produce a large diameter plastic closure. Our engineers worked closely with this client to design the precision mold. The 70 mm mold cavity was made of H13 ESR tool steel to create the wide-mouth closure. Employing CNC turning and machining capabilities, we produced the 4-¼" diameter mold cavity that had a wall thickness of .045" to .078". The engraving was produced using our in-house EDM and high speed milling capabilities. To increase the wear life of the mold, a chromium nitride plus flash chrome finish was applied per the customer's requirements. No job is too big or too small for JB Tool, Die & Engineering, Inc. When called upon to make an upper spindle shaft for a high-speed rotary machine, we were ready to go. The customer required the spindle shaft to be constructed from air-hardening AISI A6 tool steel. The fabrication process began with CNC turning, grinding, and milling to achieve the rough size. Then we heat treated and used CNC cylindrical grinding to reach the finished dimensions of 9.5" in length and 1"in diameter. We were also able to meet the requirements that the diameters be concentric within .0002". We are specialists in high-speed rotary machines.
