Pulse Extender Module

The Pulse Extender Module was designed for an industrial controls customer. The client originally engaged Malibu Technologies to design a module they could use to interface a new sensor to their existing test system. The particular new sensor operated in a different manner than their system could handle. The purpose of this module was to convert the signal from the new sensor to a format compatible with their existing test system by extending the duration of each pulse out of the sensor. Being a controls project, it needed to be packaged in a manner consistent with that industry, i.e. no open circuit boards that could be damaged. The images provided are the result of our full product realization cycle.

With regards to the disciplines this particular design utilized, it required Electrical Engineering of the circuitry, Printed Circuit Board Design to take the schematic and convert it in to manufacturable form, Mechanical Design for the enclosure packaging, Software Engineering for the Micro-controller that controls the variable pulse length, and Validation Testing Services to make sure it conforms to the customers design criteria. We built prototype and production units for the customer.

Automated Breakout Box

The Automated Breakout Box, or Auto-BOB was designed for automotive and industrial controls customers. They use this device for testing new modules during development for automotive and industrial applications by simulating wire breaks and shorts to power, ground or a transient source. Where previously a manual test procedure was followed by technicians using detailed instructions to perform the proper testing, utilizing the Auto-BOB allows for automated, consistent and streamlined Validation Testing.

By automating these processes and making them repeatable and removing manual error from the equation, the Auto-BOB takes product design and validation to a new level of simplicity. The unit can be powered from 110220V AC or 12V DC, so it can be put in test vehicles for real world or on-road testing.

Dental Light

A teeth whitening company brought in a design that another manufacturer had produced for a Dental Light, which consumers use to whiten their teeth using a near UV LED that activates the whitening gel. Their design was for a double-sided SMD assembly with 23 different components and 50 different placements, making the manufacturing and BOM cost very high.

The client was looking to reduce the product cost, and by engaging the Malibu Technologies engineering group we were able to do a full redesign which had the same overall size and fit into the original product housing. Using standard, off-the-shelf components Malibu Technologies was able to limit the new design to a single-sided SMD assembly. The new design had only 13 components and 20 placements; effectively a >50% reduction in labour and a BOM cost reduction of >40% while maintaining the same color wavelength and brightness as the original design. An increase in efficiency also provided at least 10 whitening cycles on a single charge significantly better than the original. Reliability was also greatly increased by having fewer failure points within the circuitry.
