It is caught mainly with shore seines, bagnets and coastal bottom trawls in Asian countries. Ribbon fish is marketed fresh, frozen and iced as well as dried salted in some countries.
It occurs in the coastal waters to about 60 m in depth. Males can grow to a larger size than females. It feeds on worms, crustaceans, mussels, cephalopods and fishes. It is available as Whole or Headless and Gutless.
Sardine or Indian Oil Sardine, as it is commonly known, is one of the two most important commercial fishes in India and Pakistan. The Indian Oil Sardine is one of the more regionally limited species of Sardinella and can be found in the northern regions of the Indian Ocean. These fish feed on phytoplankton (diatoma), zooplankton (copepods).
Mullet is a costal specie which is also found in estuaries and freshwater. It usually feeds on detritus, algae and small bottom organisms, taken in with sand and mud and rejecting the indigestible parts. They usually travel in schools and form large aggregations when spawning takes places. Grey Mullet is very popular amongst the locals in the Makran Coastal region where it is their preference over other fishes for personal consumption.
The black pomfret, Parastromateus niger, is a species of carangid native to reefs of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean. This species grows to 75 cm (30 in) in total length and is very important to local commercial fisheries. The Black Pomfret is known as the cheaper cousin of the usual Silver Pomfret because of its slightly more “fishy” taste smell.
It is common along beaches, sandbars, mangrove creeks and estuaries. They usually are found forming schools and adults bury themselves in the sand when disturbed. Lady Fish mainly feeds on polychaete worms, small prawns, shrimps and amphipods, Oviparous, Larvae and juveniles are pelagic feeding on planktons.
