Titanium - strong and low thermal expansion Titanium is a silvery white, abundant but difficult to exploit light metal. Titanium is very pliable, weldable, relatively thermally stable and conducts electricity well. Key properties are mechanical strength and low thermal expansion. Titanium is fairly stable in air at room temperature and its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of precious metals.Highly pure titanium is used as a getter metal to remove the last gas residues in vacuum technology. When constructing chemical plants, corrosion-resistant pure titanium is used. Titanium alloys make excellent construction materials for the shipbuilding and aerospace industries thanks to their great strength, low weight and excellent corrosion resistance. Titanium is a key alloy element in speciality steels.

Niobium is a shiny, white, soft and ductile transition metal. It takes a bluish cast when exposed to air at room temperature for an extended period of time. It starts to oxidize in air at 200° C. When processed, it must be placed in a protective atmosphere at moderate temperatures. Niobium has superconductive properties and it has been useful in making superconductive magnets in the form of niobium-zirconium (Nb-Zr) wire, which retains its superconductivity in strong magnetic fields.  Niobium is also used arc-welding rods for stabilized grades of stainless steel. Thousands of pounds of niobium have been used in air frame systems, including in the Gemini space program. Niobium is also commonly used in making jewelry

Tantalum is a shiny grey, extremely hard, stretchable heavy metal from the vanadium group, which is very pliable and weldable. Tantalum is among the high-melting-metals, is extremely resistant to acids (except hydrofluoric acids) and has a high absorptive capacity for hydrogen and nitrogen. In nature, tantalum occurs only in bonded form and together with niobium. Tantalum is used in electrical engineering, chemistry, high temperature furnaces, evaporating plants and in nuclear engineering. Rust and acid-resistant steels have tantalum added as an alloy component. Tantalum carbide is used for producing hard metals.

Tungsten is a silvery white, lustrous (in one piece) or grey (powder form) heavy metal, which is hard and brittle but can be made stretchable by hammering or, drawn to form thin wires. Tungsten is characterised by its high melting point, good thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance and low thermal expansion. Tungsten is suitable for resistant heating elements, filaments (high temperature furnaces, electrical engineering), evaporation boats, in evaporation systems engine parts, x-ray anodes and welding electrodes. Tungsten rods can be melted into high-melting glasses to add electrical conductivity. Tungsten is used in nuclear engineering. Tungsten alloys are used about 80 % in the steel industry and approximately 10 % each in the hard metal industry and electrical engineering.

Molybdenum is among the high-melting-heavy metals, meaning it is characterised by, among other things, its high melting point, good thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion. In the past, molybdenum was often mistaken for lead. Molybdenum is processed to form semi-finished products such as rods, wires, sheets and tubes, which are used in the lamp industry, in glass manufacturing, as components for jet engines, rockets and in high temperature nuclear reactors. Steel alloyed with Molybdenum becomes significantly harder, more robust and more resistant to corrosion with the additions of just small amounts of molybdenum.
