A leading precision surgical instrument manufacturer chose New Jersey Precision Technologies, Inc. for the fabrication of this orthopedic surgical cutting block. Designed for use in knee replacement operations, the cutting block dramatically improves the surgical process by providing a customizable template for each patient. The cutting block with guide slots accommodates an oscillating saw and allows the surgeon to set the precise location, depth, and angle for the required cuts. This eliminates the need to drill into the bone and insert a metal rod to guide the saw blade. The result is a better fitting, smoother functioning, longer lasting joint. We manufactured 25 cutting blocks in six different sizes utilizing our high precision electrical discharge machining (EDM) and CNC machining capabilities. EDM has several advantages over traditional machining techniques, including the ability to cut hardened metals, hold tight tolerances and machine intricate features with no direct contact between the wire or electrode and the workpiece. New Jersey Precision Technologies used wire EDM, sinker EDM and hole pop EDM as well as traditional CNC milling to manufacture the cutting blocks, meeting tolerances of ±0.0005” and ±0.25° on some features. Our customer’s specifications also called for a surface finish of 28 RMS for the slot interiors and brushed satin finish for the exterior of the part.

This example of New Jersey Precision Technologies, Inc's custom plastic extrusion tooling is for a horizontal 2.5" Davis-Standard plastic extruder with a 1" Davis-Standard satellite extruder feeding downward from above the main body at a 90° angle. Our engineering department used four-axis wire EDM programming software to create the extrusion profile and we machined the parts using our state-of-the-art Mitsubishi wire EDM machines in conjunction with CNC milling. The main body of the extrusion is rigid PVC, while the co-extrusion is flexible PVC fed through a port in the transition plate, which has polished milled tracks designed to flow smoothly into the rear of the die face. The co-extrusion has two feed areas: one of the feed areas forms a live hinge and the other area is a surface cap to coat the rigid PVC with a layer of flexible PVC as a grip function. We also added user-friendly flow-limiting screws to the die, allowing the operator to control the flow independently of the two co-extrusion feed areas' throttle valves. The tooling is made from 420 stainless steel and the interface between the components is located by dowel pins. We also made two six-inch long vacuum calibrators for the downstream portion of the extrusion process. Each vacuum calibrator has .015" wide vacuum slots and we machined the extrusion contour to a 16 RMS finish, enabling our customer to achieve fine plastic extrusion smoothness and very high extrusion rates. We help our customers achieve the fastest flow rates possible by optimizing our tooling to eliminate eddies and turbulence and maintain balanced laminar flow. The feed head is partitioned and balanced to help distribute plastic in correct proportion to all areas. Streamlining the extrusion pathway can improve feed rates by up to 25 percent or more. This tooling was built in 3 to 4 days after the receipt of the order.

Used in the pharmaceutical industry, these vertical fingers, horizontal fingers and orientation blocks represent some of the primary components of a popular family of capsule-filling machines. New Jersey Precision Technologies, Inc employs a combination of CNC milling and wire EDM techniques to machine the complex shapes required in the parts, which are made from 316 stainless steel and custom-engraved to our customer's specifications. Wire EDM offers several advantages over traditional machining for this job. First, the precision, accuracy and repeatability of wire EDM guarantees the moving parts will always fit together smoothly with less wear on the components. Second, using wire EDM to cut the fingers eliminates surface imperfections and a rough finish, which would occur as a result of chatter in the milling process. Using EDM we are able to achieve a smooth 16 RMS finish and hold tolerances as tight at +-0.0005" on some features before doing any additional finishing work. When the machine is running, capsules continuously slide across the exposed surfaces of the parts, so a clean, smooth finish is critical. Finally, using wire EDM reduces production costs because we are able to stack the parts four pieces high or more for the wire cutting process. Stacking allowing us to offer discounted pricing over our competition for larger quantities. As an OEM parts manufacturer, NJPT works closely with its customers to learn how their products are used, how they work and how to optimize manufacturing processes in order to improve quality and efficiency. For example, we obtained exact measurements of the milled tracks in the encapsulation machines' magazines that feed capsules into the orientation blocks that we manufacture in order to determine the most favorable dimensions and tolerances for our parts. By studying the design and operation of the capsule-filling machines we were able to see how our component parts function within the final assembly and improve the quality of our components. NJPT stocks these components in a variety of sizes in order to meet our customers' needs.
