The Medical Equipment industry is one of the most demanding when it comes to product quality, surface finishes and user interface. Metal enclosures provide the shell and the frame to support the integration of electronics and other highly sensitive devices. In order to ensure sustained functionality of such apparatus, the equipment manufacturers in this industry need reliable and sophisticated suppliers of components. Additional to technological capability – which is considered a must - the degree of process control is the distinctive element that separates good performers from the average players. It is precisely these criteria that motivated a reputable OEM of medical devices to transfer the manufacturing and mechanical assembling of multiple generations of mobile carts to Nelson Industrial. Soon after the first order was completed and the processes validated, our Technical Department engaged in a product redesign exercise – in direct collaboration with the design and marketing groups of the customer. The aim was Value Engineering and Process Optimization. What resulted after a three month effort, was a superior product – improved esthetics and functionality, while easier to manufacture and assemble – providing, in the mean time, a standard platform for multiple variants. Currently at its third generation, with the original OEM having been acquired by a larger corporation, this product family continues to represent an important component of our “Medical” portfolio. To date, hundreds of such carts have been produced in quarterly batches, and delivered to the final integrator in packages going straight to their assembly line. Our internal systems ensure perfect quality, 100% of the time.
he project highlighted here is known as a “Toaster”; it is a propane-fuelled, electronically-controlled infrared heater. It is designed for thawing ground to allow excavation and trenching in periods and locations affected by frost. Within 2 weeks of engineering, procurement and project planning, followed by 45 days of production, we managed to produce, integrate, test and ship 200 units. Four trailer loads of product have been dispatched in northern areas of Alberta and Ontario, just in time to keep the construction work alive throughout the white season.
The program includes over 200 distinct finished products. The orders are communicated weekly in quantities aligned with the consumption rate of multiple assembly lines, across North America. Our ERP system compiles all requirements and generates production orders in lot sizes correlated with optimal material utilization and the most effective use of capacity. The operations are scheduled daily and work is assigned in accordance to complexity and skills, while the progression of work orders is monitored in real-time by production control personnel. Quality Leaders are responsible for product inspection at each work center, once qualified finished products are either maintained in stock for future demand, or packaged and shipped just-in-time to the appropriate destination. The multi-year record indicates 99% On Time Delivery to promised dates. The quality of the product, the ability to respond to fluctuating demand, the technical capabilities in providing reliable manufacturing solutions and the engineering competencies ensuring rigorous revision control are the main ingredients of this long-term business relationship and the guarantors of great customer satisfaction.
