IEF is on the cutting edge of barrier packaging films. Utilizing our state of the art 7 and 9 layer extrusion lines and the latest generation of Nylon, EVOH and Sealant resins, we are able to engineer moderate and high barrier solutions for meat, cheese, sauces, bag-in-a-box or dry-goods applications. IEF also has vast experience in non-food barrier films used in the medical, chemical and automotive markets.

For instance, we have been working with existing customers who use our perforated film to wrap trays of glass jars, cans and plastic bottles. They started with a 2.4 mil film; now it’s 1.5 mils. Not only does it use less material and retain strength properties, it’s also ready for different types of shrink equipment—whether it is typical sheeting or u-film. The film we created for these customers is ready to insert the product and shrink around it.

It may not sound like a lot, but a quarter of a millimeter is a significant competitive advantage in the world of shrink film. That's why here at IEF, we're green with excitement over our latest innovation, a micro-perforated shrink film with a gauge of .45 mm - the lowest-gauge film we've ever produced. The shrink film was developed specifically for cucumbers, one of the produce aisle's most popular commodities and one of only a handful of vegetables shrink-wrapped for retail sale. Targeted by IEF as a good fit for our film and manufacturing capabilities, developing the perforated shrink film was no easy feat. The shrink film had two distinct requirements: one, that it beat the current industry standard of a .5 mm or .6 mm gauge. And secondly, that new lower gauge had to be successfully, and consistently, perforated for breathability.

IEF has a long history of supplying film to specialty markets, including wide width films in jumbo roll format, used widely in industrial protection applications. Continuous improvement and updates to our technology, equipment and formulation allow us to provide top quality wide width films characterized by unfailing strength and durability.

Putting a lid on it: meet our newest innovation in food packaging Sitting down and talking to our customers – really listening to their challenges – is often the spark for a new idea or better approach. Such was the case for our latest innovation: a clean-peeling lidding stock. Developed specifically for one of Canada’s leading suppliers of gourmet olives, the new lidding stock had to meet several performance challenges. First, it had to provide an oxygen barrier to keep the olives fresh. That perfect seal had to survive transportation of the product from production line and warehouse to retail and then home with the consumer. And it had to work despite being in constant contact with the oil and brine the olives float in. Finally, the application demanded an improved consumer experience with a clean, even peel: no tears, easier opening and fewer spills.
