Polishing films are made by coating a polyester film backing with fibrous (Flocked) material. Abrasive and non-abrasive forms are available. The non-abrasive form can be charged with polishing compounds and slurries. Polishing films are used for polishing MT style fiber optic connectors, final polishing of metals, plastics, glass, and lapidary work.Fiber Optic Polishing. Polishing Film helps you consistently meet geometry and fiber height requirements in your MT connector polishing operation. Polishing Film enables you to generate fiber protrusion and the proper ferrule geometry. Polishing Film can provide: Control of fiber protrusion Less cleaning than with a slurry process High throughput Low rejects Consistent results Lapidary. Polishing films are ideal for the final polishing of cabochons. These films will eliminate the “orange peel” effect. Aluminum Oxide Polishing Film. Available in grades 0.5 and 1 micron. Silicon Carbide Polishing Film. Available in 3 micron. Cerium Oxide Polishing Film. Available in 0.5 micron.
Diamond Metal Bond Discs offer precisely-graded diamond particles electroplated to a flat brass or aluminum backing. Extremely durable and long lasting, these discs are designed for heavy stock removal and flat lapping of hard-to-grind materials. Use on lapping machines with a rigid support plate. Ideal for grinding the angle on fiber optic connectors, coarse grinding and initial polishing of hard-to-grind SEM and TEM samples, lapidary, glass and other applications where durability and a high removal rate is desired. Diamond Metal Bond Discs. Available in grades 6, 15, 30, 45 microns, 100 and 220 mesh. Available without PSA backing. Product Code 6MB1 Available with PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) backing. Product Code 6MB8
Lapping film is made by coating a uniform polyester film backing with precision graded abrasives. Resin bonding is water proof and impervious to most oils and solvents. Resin options can be tailored to your specific application. Lapping films are available with or without a PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) back. Applications for lapping films include polishing fiber optics, light guides, laser deliver fiber, semiconductor dies, optical components, ceramic components, computer read-write heads, lapidary, gemstones, glass, medical devices, sample preparation for SEM and TEM analysis, blade and tool sharpening, cam and crankshaft finishing, roll finishing, flat grinding, flat polishing, hobby work, art work and many others. Lapping film can be used on most materials that require a super-fine, super-consistent finish.
Final Polishing Films are made by coating polyester film with precision graded Silicon Dioxide mineral. Typical nominal grading is 0.02 microns. Final Polishing Films are used for the final polish of fiber optic connectors, light guides, and SEM and TEM samples. Benefits of using Final Polishing Films: Eliminates the need for messy slurries. Reduces overall process time. Produces excellent surface finish. Produces higher connector yields. Provides superior fiber height control. 3M 863X (869X with PSA) - Provides superior fiber height control but requires longer polishing time. 3M 863XW (869XW with PSA) - Higher mineral content than 863X, making it more aggressive for faster polishing. Designed to use on machines that run at lower speeds and lower pressures. 3M 865X - Long lasting. Lasts 2 to 3 times longer than 863X or 863XW. Maintains good fiber height with tight standard deviation.
