Thread Mills

Thread mills are used to produce threads on machining centers which are capable of helical interpolation. The benefits of thread milling versus tapping are specific to the needs of the customer. Short run jobs especially in expensive parts where thread finish is critical are favorable for thread milling. Difficult to machine materials such as inconel, hard steels or titanium and short run jobs requiring taper pipe threads can be thread milled

Hand Taps

A complete range of machine screw, fractional and metric sizes is available with taper, plug or bottom chamfer. The tapering of the threads at the front end distributes the cutting action over several teeth. When the tapering amounts to 7 to 10 threads, the tap is called a taper tap; 3 to 5 threads a plug tap; and 1 to 2 threads a bottoming tap.

Taps are used to make threads in a hole so that a fastener can be inserted to hold the mating parts together.

The term hand tap originated in the nineteenth century when most internal threading was done by hand. The straight flute design is most common today, although most tapping is now done on machines. Hand taps are general purpose used either by hand or on production machines.

Spiral Point Taps

Spiral point taps are frequently called gun taps because they shoot the chips cut by the angular cutting edge forward. This style is the most efficient and cost effective when tapping a through hole. The two and three flute styles of spiral point tap allow effective chip evacuation and produce clean threads under normal production conditions.

Regals general purpose design provides both a cutting action and solid construction to ensure long life in steel, aluminum, brass and other materials. Sizes up to or 20 millimeters are standard and special spiral point taps can be made up to 1 or 24 millimeters in 24 hours. AlTiN coated spiral point taps are available for our inventory as well.

Carbide Taps

The selection of carbide taps for high volume production was limited to materials such as brass, bronze and high silicon aluminum where abrasion was the cause of tool wear. The design required strength behind the cutting edge limiting the flute geometry and range of materials to be tapped.

Regals carbide and carbo-clad taps are made from ultra fine-grain carbide with a high cobalt-content binder. This allows us to design taps with high shear cutting edges when needed to thread hard metal, Inconel and other materials. The combination of the sophisticated carbide grades with advanced multi-layered coatings is suitable for tapping at high speeds and ensuring unsurpassed productivity.

Regal offers solid carbide taps up to 38 from our catalog, and above that size brazes carbide blades to HSS bodies up to 1 . NPT and NPTF pipes sizes are available as well. As is always the case, special taps to meet your specifications are made and coated in less than two weeks.

Pipe Taps

Pipe threads are used when joining units intended to accommodate the flow of liquids or gases, such as fuel, oil, water or compressed air. Some internal pipe threads are straight; however, the majority of these assemblies feature tapered threads which have inherent design which makes tapping more difficult than straight threads. When tapping taper pipe threads, every tooth of the tap engaged with the work is cutting until the rotation is stopped. Because these threads are used in a variety of materials and frequently the parts produced are high volume, Regal has designed a number of different styles specific for various materials to insure quality parts while optimizing production and cost of parts produced. Regal provides low, medium and high hook pipe taps, as well as interrupted thread tools which reduces chip packing when the tap is fully engaged. Extension shank taper pipe taps are also immediately available. Our 24 hour special program includes special pipe tap production of special projections, and either right or left hand tapered or straight threads.
