XSTAT-PPH is an investigational device under development by Oregon Health & Science Univsersity and RevMedx for the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in low resource settings. Based on FDA-cleared XSTAT™ technology, XSTAT-PPH™ works by applying a group of small, rapidly-expanding sponges into the postpartum uterus using a lightweight applicator. PPH is the leading cause of maternal mortality in low-income countries, and responsible for a quarter of all maternal deaths globally. The majority of all deaths related to PPH will occur within 24 hours following delivery and outside of a health care setting, where operative measures are not readily available. Nearly all of these deaths could be prevented by swift intervention with a series of non-operative and operative measures. A low cost, single use agent that could be easily placed to achieve uterine tamponade during transport could transform the global treatment of PPH and significantly reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.
