LANDING GEAR PARTS & ASSEMBLIES FOR THE AEROSPACE & DEFENSE INDUSTRY (click on thumbnail to enlarge) Titanium Landing Gear Link Request a Quote A customer in the aerospace industry contracted Southern Precision Machining to manufacture the landing gear link system shown here. These highly detailed structural parts were to be used on the landing gear of a 767, and would take extensive machining capabilities to complete. SPM was up to the challenge, expertly machining titanium 6AL4V to the specified configurations. Utilizing advanced CNC machining systems, the components were machined to tolerances as close as of ±0.0005” which was required for the bearing bores. The part was subjected to a titanium anodizing process for corrosion and wear resistance. CMM Validation testing was performed to ensure the necessary accuracy and quality standards were met. Overall dimensions for the completed part were 4” x 6” x 10”. Turnaround time for this project was 18 weeks, with 8 units shipped annually to the customer. HIGH SPEED MACHINING & MONOLITHIC PART CONSTRUCTION FOR THE GENERAL AVIATION INDUSTRY (click on thumbnail to enlarge) Access Door Request a Quote Southern Precision Machining is a dedicated provider of precision machined components with extensive experience in aerospace and aviation applications. In the project profiled here, SPM was contracted by a customer in the aviation industry to manufacture an access door, used in a general aviation application. A 34” aluminum plate was used for this monolithic part. SPM machined this part using a high speed horizontal work center, with vacuum fixtures. A profile tolerance of .030” was maintained along with .014 true position for the fastener locations. Custom captive fasteners were installed along with the name plate. Prior to hardware assembly the part is anodized, primed and finished with a top coat for longevity and corrosion resistance. SPM procured the name plate from a customer approved source. This is a model based definition part, from model to product. Dimensions for the finished part were 34” thick, 10” in width, and 26” in length. This project was completed after a turnaround time of 10 weeks, and an annual shipment of 22 units are sent to the customer. HIGH SPEED MACHINING OF COMPLEX SHAPES FOR THE GENERAL AVIATION INDUSTRY Southern Precision Machining was commissioned by a customer in the aviation industry to fabricate a custom emergency exit door, used in a general aviation application. 7050 aluminum plate material was machined utilizing our 5-axis high speed machining center. Requiring deep pocketing, and a profile tolerance of .030”. A true position tolerance of .015” was achieved for bored holes. Post machining, the door is finished with chromic acid anodize and required extensive masking for primer and top coat. CMM inspection is required to certify part accuracy and compliance with CATIA V5 MBD standards. Overall dimensions of the finished door were 36” in width, 40” in length, and a 6” thickness. This project had a lead time of 12 weeks, and 6 pieces were shipped to the customer. LARGE AERO STRUCTURE ASSEMBLY FOR THE AEROSPACE & DEFENSE INDUSTRY (click on thumbnail to enlarge) Pressure Box Request a Quote Southern Precision Machining was contracted to construct a pressure box by a customer in the aerospace and defense industry. This box is a structural assembly used for military programs. This unit was constructed of 8 individually machined parts, composed of 7050 aluminum plate. Complex machining processes were carried out to manufacture the parts according to supplied drawings and models. Advanced high speed 10, 000 RPM 3 and 5-axis machinery was employed, along with a floor assembly jig. Extensive assembly using Floor Assembly Jigs are necessary to assembly this structural part. This assembly uses 12 different fasteners including high locks, nut plates, and inserts. A total of 384 individual fasteners were used in its construction. Prior to assembly the component parts are treated with type 1 chromic acid anodizing for enhanced corrosion resistance, along with primer and top coat. The assembly process required extensive sealing and room temperature bonding. This assembly was extensively tested and inspected, including CMM geometric validation, and NDT testing techniques to evaluate part properties and ensure the assembled components exhibited no gaps or leaks. Finished dimensions of the pressure box were 18" x 20" x 40", completed in a 10 week turnaround time. 14 units are shipped annually to the customer. GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT FOR THE AEROSPACE & DEFENSE INDUSTRY (click on thumbnail to enlarge) Stanchion Request a Quote A customer in the aerospace and defense industry contracted Southern Precision Machining to fabricate a stanchion that would be used as a part of C130 ground support equipment system. This non-flight related component was composed of extruded aluminum, manufactured using 3-axis vertical CNC machinery and assembly jigs. The complex assembly as called for in the supplied drawings and models machined and assembled using custom hardware, requiring a true position tolerance of .030". The part was finished with a protective anodizing treatment. This assembly required extensive stenciling and identification. Thorough testing and inspections were conducted including CMM validation. Overall completed part dimensions were 60" length, 40" width, and 4" thick. Turnaround time for this fabrication was 10 weeks, and 14 units are shipped yearly to the customer. TITANIUM STRUCTURAL PARTS & ASSEMBLIES FOR THE GENERAL AVIATION INDUSTRY (click on thumbnail to enlarge) Titanium Engine Strap Request a Quote A customer in the aviation industry needed a custom engine strap manufactured for a structural part for use on pylons. Southern Precision Machining was contracted to perform all of the required work, which included the extensive machining and shot peening of titanium 6AL4V material. State of the art twin spindle 3-axis CNC machinery was employed for this process, which featured mill fixtures and vacuum workholding. The thin titanium skins were constructed holding a surface profile tolerance of .030". Shot peening and cleaning procedures were performed to create the desired finish. CMM validation was rendered to assure accuracy and quality standards were met. Forty-eight engine straps were completed after a turnaround time of 16 weeks, with a standing orders sent to the customer annually. Finished dimensions of the strap were 100" length, 30" width, and a thickness of .5".
