By leveraging our core technologies of materials science for refractory metals, Spectra-Mat, Inc. has a full range of products for the thermal management of sophisticated devices, mainly based on GaN and GaAs, where heat generation is localized in small areas: by infiltrating high purity copper into W or Mo, Spectra-Mat, Inc. is able to provide tailored materials in terms of thermal expansion and thermal conductivities to even the most demanding applications. In particular, molybdenum copper (MoCu) is 40% lighter than tungsten copper (WCu), which makes it a superior alternative for weight sensitive applications. Our materials are manufactured starting from very high purity W and Mo powders with no additives, assuring their homogenous metallographic structure and hermeticity. Spectra-Mat, Inc. can provide tungsten copper and molybdenum copper parts in different shapes and sizes to address different applications needs: we offer small submounts for semiconductor lasers, large bases for GaAs GaN power amplifiers and fiber lasers, flanges and carriers for single chip RF and MW GaAs and GaN diodes. Spectra-Mat, Inc. has already recognized the importance of wafer level packaging, especially for cost sensitive applications such as high brightness LEDs: 2’, 3”, 4” and 6” WCu and MoCu wafers are available to meet next generation packaging requirements. Spectra-Mat, Inc. is also working in the addition of a ceramic layer on top of WCu and MoCu material to extend the use of our thermal management materials to other substrates types such as silicon carbide (SiC), sapphire (Al2O3) and silicon (Si). Over fifty years ago Spectra-Mat, Inc. recognized the need for thermionic emitters for high power electron tubes: the development of these emitters was accomplished by utilizing a porous tungsten matrix impregnated with barium aluminate. When heated, the cathodes provide low work function electron emission. Dispenser cathodes are used where low temperature, high current density electron emission is desired. Spectra-Mat, Inc. has vertically integrated production of dispenser cathodes, from finely sifting the tungsten powders and preparing the impregnant mixture in house untill the test of the cathodes in the vacuum environment before shipment. Thanks to recent investment in equipment, Spectra-Mat, Inc. is able also to machine and manufacture large area cathodes as well as manufacture e-guns with dispenser cathodes under customer’s design. Spectra-Mat, Inc. manufactures tungsten alloys ranging from 90 to 95 percent tungsten content, being the common name is Tungsten Heavy Alloy (WHA). Additions of nickel and copper to tungsten matrix promote reaction with the tungsten during the manufacturing process, resulting in a two phase structure having large tungsten grains in a binder of tough nickel-copper-tungsten alloy as shown below. Although the density approaches that of tungsten, unlike tungsten WHA is readily machinable and displays superior mechanical properties as well as low thermal expansion: The high density enables WHA’s superior performance compared to lead and other lead replacements in radiation shielding, x-ray and γ-ray collimation. Spectra-Mat, Inc. proprietary process for manufacturing porous refractory metals yields high purity refractory metal materials in a wide range of available densities and pore size distributions. Spectra-Mat, Inc. manufactures 2 types of porous tungsten and molybdenum materials, both with ~100% connected porosity: Standard porous tungsten and molybdenum with average pore size ranging from 1-2 micron depending on density with an available porosity up to 40% Refractory metal (tungsten and molybdenum) "foam" has a bimodal pore distribution, with 1-2 micron pores and additionally, larger porosity that can be tailored in a range of 100-~700 microns. The porosity of tungsten or molybdenum "foam" can be up to 75% depending on pore size Our materials are easily machined to complex shapes offering an economic alternative to wrought refractory metals.
