Precision Metal Ball Bearings

Friction, or resistance to motion, is the result of the force acting between two surfaces as they slide against each other. Bearings reduce friction and provide smooth sliding contact between surfaces due to their material, shape or lubrication. Choosing the correct bearing for an application improves efficiency, extends bearing life at high speeds and avoids overheating. Bearings fall into two general categories: radial bearings that support rotating shafts and thrust bearings that support axial loads. Four classifications of bearing tolerances have been established, providing standards of precision for correct application of ball bearings. The designations are, ABEC 1, ABEC 5, ABEC 7 and ABEC 9, ABEC 9 being the most precise.

ACME Lead Screws

ower screws are a common means of translating rotary motion into linear motion. There are several different types, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on the requirements of the application. Acme lead screws are defined by their thread profile, which is trapezoidal with a thread angle of 29.

There are two immediate results of this difference in profile. It is much easier to machine, so Acme lead screws are much cheaper than square lead screws or ball screws. The second difference is a much larger area of contact between the screw and the nut. This has both advantages and disadvantages.

First, the load capacity is much higher. Second, there is much higher friction, which makes them much less efficient, but also prevents them from back-driving in most situations. So due to overheating and low efficiency, they are ill-suited for continuous power applications, but are great for vertical motion applications where the load must be suspended without dropping, like lifts and jacks. They are also suitable for medical lab automation and treatment devices, screw press drives, support legs and micro lathes.

Metal Universal Joints

Universal joints are used to transmit power, motion or both. It is a mechanical connection between intersecting shafts, which are usually not parallel. Cardan joint or Hooke joint is the most common and consists of two yokes, one on each shaft, connected by a cross-shaped intermediate member called the spider. The angle between the shafts is called the operating angle. It is usually constant during operation, but not necessarily so. Good design practice calls for low operating angles, often less than 25.

Universal joints are available in steel or in thermoplastic body members. For maximum load-carrying capacity for a given size a steel universal joint should be selected. Universal joints with thermoplastic body members are used in light industrial applications in which their self-lubricating feature, light weight, negligible backlash, corrosion resistance and capability for high-speed operation are significant advantages. Ball-jointed universals are used for high-speed operation and for carrying large torques. They are available in miniature and standard sizes.
