Straight holes restrict lateral movement, but require accurate alignment when the clearance between pivot and jewel bearing is tight. Olive holes offer lower friction with pivots and permit assembly adjustment. provide minimum contact with pivots for light, intermittent end thrust. Where thrust load is continuous, an endstone is usually combined with the ring jewel.

End thrust may be taken by having a shoulder on the pivot ride on the polished face of the ring jewel bearing or by using an endstone bearing to take the thrust from precision pivots with rounded ends

A sapphire rod can be made with all surfaces polished for optical and wear applications or with all surfaces fine grind (un-polished) to serve as an insulator.
