Polyvinyl chloride, commonly known as PVC, is the third-most widely manufactured plastic compound, after polyethylene and polypropylene. PVC compounds are manufactured for use in wide variety of applications. PVC resin is blended with various additives to provide superior cost and performance. Heat stabilizers, UV stabilizers, lubricants, plasticizers, processing aids, impact modifiers, thermal modifiers, fillers, flame retardants, biocides, blowing agents, smoke suppressors, and color pigments can all be used to meet stringent performance requirements and specifications.

Low smoke zero halogen (LSZH or LSOH) is a type of plastic used in the wire and cable industry for cable jacketing. LSOH cable jacketing is custom compounded to produce minimal smoke and no halogen when exposed to fire. Most network cables (CAT5, CAT6, etc.) are insulated with poly vinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene, or thermoplastic urethane (TPU). In a fire, halogen-containing plastic releases hydrogen chloride, a poisonous gas that forms hydrochloric acid when it comes in contact with H2O. Zero Halogen cables do not produce this toxic combination of gas, acid, and smoke when exposed to flame.

Thermoplastic Polyolefins (TPO’s) are multiphase compositions in which one phase consists of a material that is hard at room temperature and fluid when heated, and the other phase consists of an elastomeric material that is soft and rubberlike at room temperature. CPE is the standardized acronym for thermoplastic chlorinated polyethylene elastomer, which is produced by chlorination of polyethylene. The chlorine content could be as high as 70% by weight, but the current grades have a chlorine content in the range of 25% up to 42%.

Thermoplastic processing provides advantages over vulcanized, thermoset rubbers which are processed using a slower and more costly curing process.
