This trap box is made of western cedar. air nailed and glued with exterior glue. with a metal hanging bracket. and a permanently mounted metal trap inside. It may be easily moved and may be stored during the off season. Trap should last for many years.

This trap box is a breeding box. not a feeding box. This trap box is most effective during the breeding season. which normally begins as much as 30 days prior to the normal bluebird nesting season. Put the trap box in place early and then it may be left in place throughout the entire nesting season. Because the hole opening is only 1-14 inches (the correct size for house sparrows), it usually eliminates the capture of most other native birds. Bluebirds are not able to enter with this size hole.

Only one house sparrow will be trapped at a time. usually the one bothering your bluebird box. Most often this will be an older male house sparrow. This trap box is very effective in capturing these older male sparrows (the most damaging ones for bluebirds) because they are the ones seeking a nesting site and calling in a female. These older male house sparrows are extremely reluctant to use other types of traps such as ground traps or feeding stations. The breeding instinct is much stronger than the feeding instinct.

This sparrow trap box has a keyhole metal bracket on back top (not pictured) making it easy to hook on a nail or screw. It is simple to move from one location to another wherever sparrow control is desired. Hang trap box in areas where sparrows like to nest. works best in outdoor areas. The wooden trap box looks like a normal bluebird nest box. The spring-loaded metal trap is permanently mounted inside. When a house sparrow enters the house, it is trapped within the box. The trap box does not kill any bird. A fluorescent orange sticker alerts you when the trap has been tripped and the bird is captured. The hole opening is 1-14 inches, which is a correct size for sparrows and usually eliminates most other native birds.

Mounting Bracket works well with wood bluebird nest boxes.

The Van Ert Wood Duck Nest Box Startling Trap is a modified version of the Van Ert Kestrel Nest Box Starling Trap for use in Wood Duck Nest Boxes.

The Van Ert Wood Duck Nest Box Starling Trap should be installed in the same manner as the Van Ert Universal Sparrow Trap. (For more information relating to installation please refer to the Universal Sparrow Trap web page.)

The Wood Duck Nest Box Starling Trap is designed to cover a 4-inch wide oval entrance hole as specified for Wood Duck nest boxes.

Each trap comes with a full set of instructions, mounting templates, and four screws.

This trap box is made of 34" white wood. air nailed and glued with exterior glue. submerged in waterproof sealant to add years of life. and a permanently mounted metal trap inside. Trap box door opens from the top with an aluminum bottom hinge. Top opening door allows for ease of setting trap and retrieving trapped bird.

This trap box is a live trap and WILL NOT HARM any bird trapped.

These trap boxes work GREAT when placed near existing PURPLE MARTIN colonies.

This trap box is a breeding box. not a feeding box. This trap box is most effective during the starlings' breeding season. which normally begins as much as 30 days prior to the normal purple martin nesting season. Mount the trap box lower at about 5 feet off the ground (martins prefer to nest much higher) and put the trap box in place early. Then it may be left in place throughout the entire nesting season to trap the starlings that may bother your purple martin houses. Starlings seem to prefer wood boxes with darker interiors. Therefore, the starlings that come to check out your martin houses will see the wooden box or boxes below and normally drop down to check out the trap holes.

Only one starling will be captured at a time.

Pulling a pin located on the side of the box releases the front door of the trap box.

This is a complete nest box with a double power spring trap (European Starlings are powerful birds compared to English Sparrows). This box is larger than a bluebird nest box and the Urban Sparrow Trap box because starlings prefer a larger nest box. When the trap is tripped, you will most likely have a starling. However, since it is possible that other cavity nesting birds may be trapped, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to monitor this trap -- and any others -- frequently.

The Kestrel Nest Box Starling Trap is designed to cover a 3-inch diameter entrance hole as specified for Kestrel nest boxes.

Each trap comes with a full set of instructions, mounting templates, and four screws.

Remove PVC Box from its roof.

Place trap in set position then place white clip over edge of hole.

Push down to securely seat the trap on the hole edge.

The trap remains in the set position throughout the installation process.



When a sparrow enters the box, the trap will trip and the orange dot will show (as pictured).

This sparrow trap will work on any nest box which has a flat wooden front -- with slot, round, or oval entrance holes as shown in photo above -- with either front or side opening boxes.

NOTE: Slot openings should be no more than 3-12" wide. If wider, box modification may be required.
