Compressed Air Filters

New Filter Technology

The latest compressed air filter technology utilizes pleated fabric media, made up of woven microfibers. The fibers are specially treated to repel (not absorb) compressor oil & condensate, while providing an extremely high voids volume. The combination of pleating, fiber treatment and voids volume permits high airflow, while maintaining filtration efficiency, at a very low pressure-drop.

This compares very favorably against "wrap" design filters, which typically offer deeper filtration, but dramatically lower face area, resulting in higher pressure-drop and more frequent changes. The Motivair inner & outer screens are stainless steel, with a large open area, designed to withstand maximum pressure differential, while maintaining a low pressure-drop for normal flow.

The media & screens are epoxy-sealed into the end-caps, which are either precision infection moldings or high grade machined aluminum on larger sizes. The outer "sock" is a highly effective anti re-intrainment barrier, and is compatible with both mineral & synthetic oils. The entire element is secured, into the filter head with an oil-resistant o-ring to ensure zero air/oil by-pass. All 4 grades of elements feature inside-to-out airflow and Motivair elements are certified "silicone-free".

Options & Accessories

Several high quality options & accessories allow a Motivair filter installation to meet any customer's needs.

1) Wall-mounting brackets
2) Manifold kits allow for 2 or 3 filters to be installed in series
3) Cast aluminum, calibrated differential gauge
4) Sight-glass allows visual inspection of oil-level or trap operation
5) Manual drain for activated carbon filters
6) Internal auto-drain with external manual override
7) External SCM20 trap, with manual test
8) EDM20 timer-solenoid drain with manual override
9) ZLM20 zero-loss drain with manual override & alarm.

New Filter Housing

The new AF aluminum housings were designed for improved performance, with aerodynamic compressed air-flow between inlet & outlet ports.
Make from high-grade, precision die-cast aluminum, the housings have an improved, twist-lock design, with a safety whistle, should an operator attempt to open the filter under pressure. The new casting design, plus a resilient, powder coat finish provides and extremely attractive housing.

The head features a special, tapered bayonet port, which allows the element to be simply pushed into place, for a perfect seal via the recessed o-ring. Integral supports in the inner wall of the housing locks the element into place. There is no fumbling with nuts or threaded rod assemblies, and no possibility of an element becoming loose in operation The new design reduces the clearance required for element replacement. Only a few inches are required beneath the filter, for quick & easy change-out.

Larger housings (from FB150 to FB900) are fabricated in carbon steel, with an epoxy inner coating and an enamel outer finish. Models FB360-FB900 may be pipeline or floor mounted. All fabricated models are ASME stamped.

Non-cycling Refrigeration Compressed Air

Motivair MDX refrigeration compressed air dryers were designed to maximize thermal efficiency in a compact package, while offering a constant dew point of 35?F. Simplicity of design, with built-in reliability, insures minimal maintenance, for prolonged periods of operation. A patented system of hot-gas injection maintains the dew point, while eliminating any possibility of freezing under low load conditions. Environmentally friendly R134a & R22 refrigerants are used throughout the range.

Components: Smooth bare copper heat exchangers and stainless steel separators are utilized in all models up to 700 SCFM. Larger sizes have ASME stamped, smooth bore tube & shell exchangers. This design results in low power consumption, and low pressure-drop.

The patented refrigeration control system and separator provide very close dew point control, from zero the 100% if compressed air flow. High quality refrigeration components are used throughout the range, including suction accumulators, liquid receivers and solenoid valves, to insure a totally functional and reliable system. Zero-loss drain valves discharge condensate reliably, with push-to-test buttons for verification.

The welded structural frame on all modes supports easily removable panels, which are coated in baked epoxy powder, for a superior, durable finish.

MDX Operation: Hot entering compressed air is first pre-cooled by the leaving cold air, in the economizer. The pre-cooled air then enters the evaporator, where it is cooled to its final dew point by direct heat exchange with the refrigerant.

Condensed moisture is removed in the high-efficiently separator and ejected from the system via the zero-loss drain valve. The cold, dry air is reheated in the air/air economizer, before finally leaving the dryer. The refrigeration control system insures a constant dew point regardless of compressed air fluctuation, from zero to 100%.

Mist Eliminators For Compressed Air Syst

All lubricated industrial air compressors discharge oil mist into the compressed air system they serve. Motivair Mist Eliminators are deep-bed coalescing filters, designed for removing this compressor oil, plus condensed moisture and dirt from compressed air systems. Their exceptionally long element life and low pressure-drop make Motivair Mist Eliminators especially suitable for installation at the point of compression. They are an ideal back-up, in the event of a ruptured oil separator in a screw compressor, and will prevent compressor oil from flooding the piping system.

The deep element bed of woven fibers has an exceptionally high dirt holding capacity, while providing highly efficient oil removal. Using a combination of Direct Interception, Inertial Impaction & Brownian Motion, Mist Eliminators remove up to 99.999% of all 1-3 micron particles and 99.98% of all 0.1 micron particles. Housings are fabricated in carbon steel (stainless on request) with an internal epoxy lining to inhibit corrosion. All models are ASME stamped, and are finished in high quality enamel paint.

Compressed air enters the Mist Eliminator through the top inlet connection. Due to the very large surface area & low velocity, the compressed air is evenly distributed through the deep filter bed, with both aerosols and solid particles are effectively removed. The contaminants accumulate in the bottom of the housing, and are removed by an (optional) automatic drain valve. The clean air flows upwards around the outside of the element and exits through the horizontal outlet connection.

    Dew Point Meter

    Dew Point Meter

The removal of moisture and condensate in compressed air systems may be achieved with different equipment for example: aftercoolers, separators refrigeration and adsorption air dryers, filters, drain traps, etc. However, most of the time it is difficult to know what is the real quality of the treated air at the dew point achieved. The most common indicators are:

  • Analog or digital thermometer for refrigeration air dryers
  • Electronic or color-change indicators for adsorption dryers

The accuracy of these devices, although acceptable for some industrial applications, is not totally reliable, or suitable for pharmaceutical and laboratory applications, precision mechanical processing, instrumentation, etc. where air pollution can cause damage with consequently high repair & maintenance costs.

The Motivair DPM200 &DPM297 Dew Point Meters are multi-function digital instruments, able to measure simultaneously:

  • Dew point of the compressed air
  • Working Pressure
  • Air temperature under test
  • Battery condition (DPM 297 only)

DPM200 is the portable version supplied with rechargeable batteries and back-lit LCD, which displays the test results. Battery hold-up time is 8 hours. This model is supplied complete with molded carrying case and battery charger.

DPM297 has been developed for permanent or panel mounting installation. It is fitted with an adjustable dew point alarm contact, and it is typically utilized for either: a) permanent installation for dew point monitoring & alarm, or b) installation on an adsorption dryer to reduce the purge-air consumption. This version is featured, as an option, on Motivair MHL regenerative dryers.

    How it works

The DPM utilizes a sensor made of a thin, polymer film. One of the most important features of this technology is the high speed of the sensor in measuring extremely small variations. The result is a highly accurate, real-time dew point measurement.
The risk of decay in accuracy, reading after reading, is avoided with an automatic regeneration process of the probe. By automatically pre-heating the sensor for each operation, any possibility of moisture migration to the probe is eliminated.

    Meter Display

  • One back-lit LCD, capable of displaying 32 characters on two rows
  • One (right) button (I/O) which turns the unit on & off.
  • One (left) button (Multifunction), to select the requested function (dew point, temperature, pressure, battery).

    Oil/Water Separators For Compressed Air

    Compressor Condensate

All air compressors create condensate. The quantity depends on ambient temperature, humidity and operating pressure. When atmospheric air is compressed to 100 PSIG, its volume is reduced 8 times; therefore its ability to suspend water vapor is reduced proportionally. Conversely, during the act of compression, the air temperature is raised which increases the air's moisture holding capacity and prevents condensation.

However, when the condensed air cools in the aftercooler, air receiver, piping, refrigeration dryer, etc. the dew point is reached and condensation occurs. In an ambient of 85F and 70% relative humidity, there are 130 grains of moisture per pound of dry air. In these conditions, a 1, 000 SCFM compressed air system, operating at 100 PSIG, with a refrigeration dryer installed, will discharge approximately 9.7 gallons of condensate per hour, or 84, 972 gallons per year.

    The Motivair Solution

A correctly sized and installed Motivair Oil/Water Condensate Separator will separate compressor oil into a small, manageable container, reduce the residual oil content of the condensate to 10 PPM, and allow legal discharge of the condensate to the sewer.

    Selecting the Correct Model

All selections should be made, based on the SCFM system capacity, type of compressor and oil. The SCFM capacities listed in the selection chart are based on maximum North American moisture conditions, with a refrigeration dryer installed. We do not recommend smaller sizes for lower temperature/humidity areas. Always assume a refrigeration dryer may be installed in the future. Use the selection chart conservatively. Do not exceed the recommended maximum capacity.

In marginal cases use the next larger model. No gravity separator will effectively separate emulsified oils, or polyglycol lubricants. Emulsification frequently takes place when the oil & consensate is violently mixed with compressed air in timer/solenoid, manual or disc-type traps. Replacing these traps with Motivair SCM20 or Mega-Drain zero-loss traps will reduce or eliminate emulsions created this way.

When polyglycol oily condensate creates a disposal problem, the simplest solution is to change to mineral or synthetic oil, which is easily separated in a Motivair OSW separator, without the expense & maintenance of boiler, membrane or flocculation separators. Consult your compressor lubricant supplier for the correct choice.

    MEH External Heater Dryer Series

The need for clean, pure, moisture-free compressed air and gas is critical. Moisture and contaminants are found in all compressed air and gas systems causing rust and corrosion in your pneumatic tools, contaminating process flows, clogging and damaging delicate pneumatic instrumentation. When freezing temperatures are encountered, condensation trapped in air systems will freeze, causing catastrophic failure in pneumatic lines.

External Heater, purge type dryers are generally preferred by pneumatic specialists because of their simple, reliable design and because of the very low dew points that can be attained.to -100?F.in large volumes of compressed air, at minimum cost.

The drying operation uses an inert, hygroscopic material with an enormous surface to mass ratio. As air is passed upwards through this desiccant, moisture is absorbed onto the porous surface. Maximum air velocity is 60 FPM, providing a minimum contact time of 5 seconds. To provide continuous drying, the moisture is removed from the desiccant by passing a small amount of heated, dry, low pressure air through the off-line tower for a pre-set interval.

Since tha partial pressure of moisture in the bed is higher than the partial pressure of moisture in the heated purge air. Purge air and moisture are then vented to the atmosphere.

By using twin towers and an automatic cycling system, one tower is always drying while the other is regenerating, thereby providing a continuous, uninterrupted flow of dry air or gas.

    Water Filtration Solutions(CRP Packs)

CRP Paks From Clean Resource Inc.Engineered molecular filtration solutions for discharge water problems

CRP Paks provide cost-effective condensate treatment CRP Paks from Clean Resources are engineered to minimize maintenance and clean up headaches, operate efficiently in all conditions, and reduce the cost of dealing with wastewater streams. This advanced molecular filtration system removes all types of lubricants, providing a truly scientific solution to a troublesome problem. CRP Paks are filled with a media bed formulated to attract the targeted contaminant, while at the same time repelling the water molecules. Wastewater passes through the media bed and the contaminants are trapped by the bed. The lubricants are actually bonded to the media bed, virtually eliminating the possibility of ground water contamination from the spent bed. Unlike some oil/water separators that utilize gravity separation as prefiltration, CRP units need no pumps, sensors, or pre-separation filter pads. The reason CRP Paks stand alone is that the superior media bed is so efficient no prefiltration is needed. In addition, the rugged internal piping and a fail-safe decompression chamber assure proper operation. All CRP Paks contain media beds of the highest quality alumino silicate substrate, the particular sequence under tight quality assurance standards.

CRP Paks provide cost-effective condensate treatment CRP Paks are extremely cost effective. Initial cost is low, installation is easy and maintenance time is practically eliminated. Best of all, disposal costs are drastically reduced.

Decompression chamber The DC-202 decompression chamber was developed by CRP to operate with all types of drains, including float, electric, pneumatic and zero-loss styles. This design permits the separation system to properly function even in the event of a drain failure. The DC-202 decompression chamber allows for massive amounts of compressed air to be vented in the case of drain failure. The six-inch diameter port is preceded by a demister pad, thus allowing the air to vent while blocking the water and oil. Designed for easy installation, the DC-202 uses a cam lock system to quickly attach to the CRP Pak. The DC-202 has six 1/4" inlets to allow multiple drain hook ups.

Sizing information and life expectancy CRP Paks are available in three sizes. Select from 15, 30 and 55 gallon capacities to meet your specific application. Life expectancy of the CRP Pak depends on the amount of lubricant carryover from the compressor(s). Contaminant absorption capacity is approximately 50% of the media bed volume. Therefore, the 15, 30 and 55 gallon CRP Paks have capacities of about 7, 15, and 27 gallons of contaminant respectively.

CRP Paks make disposal easy In most cases, CRP Paks can be disposed of as part of your waste management pick up service, provided the proper paperwork is completed. In the event CRP Paks cannot be disposed of through your normal pick up, Clean Resources will accept spent paks through their return program. Paks must have been used in normal compressor applications.

Guaranteed performance Thousands of CRP Paks are operating successfully in the field. That's why Clean Resources can offer the following warranty.

CRP Paks, when properly sized and installed, are guaranteed to reduce the contaminants in your compressor condensate to less than 10 ppm, for the life of the unit. In the event a unit fails while operating in approved conditions and having been properly sized and installed, Clean Resources, Inc. will replace the failed CRP Pak or provide a refund through your distributor.
