Belleville washers solve problems of high loads in limited space, such as in transmission clutch assemblies, detents and loading fasteners. By combining them in various sequences, we can offer a number of load-carrying possibilities. Belleville washers are used in two broad categories of applications. When a specified load together with limited deflection is required of a spring and the allowable amount of axial space is small, the use of a wave washer can be used to obtain the desired load. Wave spring washers are especially useful to apply moderate thrust loads when radial space is limited. A wave washer can have any number of waves from two on up; however, factors such as spring index, the amount of deflection required and the load determine the number to be used in the ultimate design. For an application requiring relatively light thrust load and repeated cycles through a range of motion, the curved washer is an excellent choice. Where very little height is available, this type of washer is sometimes superior to a helical spring for maintaining tension on a cam action or similar application where a large deflection is required with a minimum change in load. Finger washers combine the flexibility of curved washers and the distributed loading points of wave washers. They are adaptable to a space with large inside and small outside diameter. Length of fingers as well as their number and thickness may be varied to obtain a wide range of characteristics. Load, deflection and stress are approximated by assuming that the fingers are cantilever springs; then samples are made and tested to prove the design.
