Laser cutting allows all designers to cut very intricate patterns and edges in all textiles extending the boundaries of the imagination. We can even cut compound materials like textile + plastic at high speeds for the automotive industry. Many fabrics have the notable advantage of melting the textile fibers during the laser cutting process so that they cannot fray. The size of the laser cut fabric parts could be as small as 12" swatches and as large as hundred yards textile panels. Laser cutting and engraving MDF MDF is one of our favorite materials for laser cutting and engraving. We laser cut up to 1" (25.4mm) thick boards mostly for the interior and sign applications. From Wikipedia: Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resinbinder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is generally denser than plywood. It is made up of separated fibres, but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. It is stronger and much more dense than particle board. The name derives from the distinction in densities of fibreboard. Large-scale production of MDF began in the 1980s, in both North America and Europe.
Laser cutting Polyester: We love it! Polyester cuts cleanly with sealed edges. Laser cut polyester panels are quite popular for the large decorative fabric panels. Laser cut polyester parts are also used in military clothing, upholstery , etc.
Laser cutting felt is almost like cutting leather – it’s totally doable with some exceptions. “Felt is a textile that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibres together. Felt can be made of natural fibres such as wool or synthetic fibres such as acrylic. There are many different types of felts for industrial, technical, designer and craft applications.” – from Wikipedia What is important to know that laser cutting WOOL felt may bring an issue of the charred edges, edge discoloration + unpleasant smell that stays for several weeks before it’s gone. Non-wool felt especially acrylic cuts rather well and clean.
Laser Cutting Shapes can laser cut woven and nonwoven material to exact sizes. Just as with most textiles, the resulting edges are sealed and resist fraying. Laser cutting Shapes can accommodate 60" wide rolls on laser cutting equipment. The laser cutting width is 51" and is endless in another direction. Usually 51" panels are sewn into the large curtains or back drops.

PVC, PVC FOAM BOARD Although these materials can be laser cut with our lasers, we avoid it as this process produces chlorine gases which is not good for the machinery or people, so we stay away from PVC. - sorry. Customers should be aware that some textiles or materials are not claimed to be PVC, although they might have a small amount of PVC content. Laser cutting of any amount of PVC is not desirable.
Laser Cutting Shapes can laser cut Wood stock up to 1" thick as well as the thinnest of Veneers. We can laser cut the most intricate inlays that you can think of, allowing for some impressive woodworking tricks. Because powerful laser settings are used for cutting 1" plywood or MDF sheets, charring could be an issue and quality concern The resulting quality of the laser cutting wood is much better for 12", 38", 12" and thinner sheets.

Polystyrene cuts fairly clean with lasers and is frequently used for architectural models. This is a great material to laser cut models of highways, roads, bridges, etc. In general we could not say that we like to laser cut polystyrene due to the not too pleasant smell. Also, when we laser cut polystyrene we have to be very alert due to the fact that styrene can easily catch the fire.
RUBBER, SILICON RUBBER Rubber, as most elastomers cuts nicely. The laser cut parts may have charred edges that could be easily washed away. Laser cut rubber parts may be used in many hi-tech applications including medical devices. We usually laser cut sheets that are not thicker than 14". We could laser cut thicker rubber, but it becomes more polluting process.
Vinyl films are widely used for sign making. It is very attractive to use colored vinyl films for acrylic sign letters, acrylic or plastic signage and other interior projects. To laser cut vinyl film is difficult due to the massive contamination of the laminated surface at high temperatures. Laser Cutting Shapes has developed a laser cutting process to kiss cut vinyl cleanly. Vinyl with adhesive back is applied to a hard surface and laser cut with low power. We selectively peel the vinyl and leave the desired pattern on the surface.
