The Helicopter Landing Kit was developed by Leland Stanford, a structural firefighter, in 1985 because he was involved in several emergency helicopter landings whereby the personnel on the ground who were assisting in landing the helicopter got in the way and, fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but it made him realize how dangerous landing a helicopter is. Leland's core business has always been the gas filled cylinders that inflate life jackets. While in the life jacket business, the need for additional safety items such as battery-operated strobe lights has come to light many times. Leland is actively involved in the manufacturing and distribution of several types of strobe lights. The one that is featured in the current Emergency Landing Kit uses a wind proof wire, metal base that turns onto the bayonet fittings on the bottom of each battery powered strobe. These wind proof bases allow the strobe to stand upright so the pilot can see a "box" of five flashing strobes. The fifth one uses a different colored lens indicating an upwind direction, as helicopters need to land into the wind.

Leland brings to the design table miniaturized gas filled cartridges with an indefinite storage life. These cartridges, as small as 1" long, can have stored pressures up to 3000 psi. They are quite efficiently made and millions are kept in stock at any given time. Many types of gases can be used. Regulators and control valves are typically available for most applications. The cartridges are puncturable and when welded closed, provide an extremely reliable and unique way to store energy.

Xenon bulb USCG approved strobe light. Operates 8-12 hours at 50-60 flashes per minute, and then automatically switches down to 20-30 flashes per minute for another 8 hour shift. Excessive G loads, shock, and harsh salt environments are the standard criteria for these DOT approved pressure vessels. Gas filled cylinders need to be handled with caution. They are pressure vessels with a limit as to how much pressure they can hold. While each cylinder design has its' own inherent limitations, most disposable cylinders are designed to have a burst strength limit of around 6, 400 psi, some go to 12, 000 psi. But this is relative to the filling pressure and the type of gas being filled. In North and South America we are pleased to offer the patented safe sealing cap. This is the puncturable cap on top of the gas filled cylinder. It is designed to allow a slow and controlled release of gas pressure. There is a video below which demonstrates this.
