Vacuum Pressure Impregnation

  • Materials Carbon Steel Stainless Steel
  • Maximum Working Length 200 ft
  • Pressurizing Medium Air CO2 GN2
At our 25, 000 sq. ft. fabrication shop, we perform custom designing, fabricating, testing, and installation of a broad range of vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) autoclaves. Melco Steel, Inc. impregnating systems are best suited for wood treating, resin impregnating, as well as other processing applications in industries ranging from carbon and wood product manufacturing to metallurgy. Our VPI autoclaves can be used as cost-effective alternatives for conventional dip and bake methods for processing electrical windings, armatures, castings, or powdered metal products. Depending on your specific processing needs, VPI systems can be offered in verticalhorizontal and vacuumnon-vacuum designs. Auxiliary support systems of our VPI autoclaves include storage racks, internal support racks, cart racks, flooring, and manifolds. The hydraulic cylinders used to swing open the doors of our VPI process vessels are fitted with a counterbalance valve. This device is used to prevent the door from falling in the event of hydraulic system failure. We specialize in building counterbalance valves customized to your VPI tank configuration and weight. A kit can be provided that consists of a factory set counterbalance valve, tube, and tube fittings for installation on a existing VPI tank fitted with non-counterbalance valve. Depending on the size and type of parts impregnated, desired sealing results, as well as other production parameters, our VPI systems can be customized in a number of ways.

Custom-Built Vulcanizers

  • Materials Carbon Steel Stainless Steel
  • Maximum Working Diameter 32 ft
  • Maximum Working Length 200 ft
  • Maximum Operating Pressure 3000 psi
Combining over 3 decades of autoclave manufacturing expertise, Melco Steel, Inc. designs and builds vulcanizers in a broad range of custom configurations, primarily for the rubber industry. Our standard and custom-built vulcanizers can be used for curing plastic and rubber products. Depending on your specific rubber processing needs, we can build vulcanizing autoclaves in direct steam-injected as well as electric dry-heated models. Our custom dry vulcanizers offer optimal heat and pressure combinations ideal for processing advanced materials, a feature absent in conventional steam heated systems. Available in either horizontal or vertical orientations, Melco Steel's rubber curing autoclaves can be easily integrated into OEMs' production facilities. Typical auxiliary systems provided with our vulcanizers include vacuum pumps, carts, and steam generators. Our instrumentation options range from simple microprocessor-based controls to network compatible computer-based controls systems. These controls can be specifically configured in accordance with your process control needs. Operators can document process data using circularstrip chart recorders or data loggers. As a complete turnkey fabrication shop, we design, engineer, fabricate, and test autoclaves to meet your specific vulcanizing requirements. In addition to manufacturing solutions, Melco Steel also offers support services such as installation, FOB Factory, and on site start-up.

Sterilizer Systems

  • Equipment Capabilities Sterilizing
  • Pressurizing Medium Air CO2 GN2
  • Heating Methods Electric Steam
We specialize in the manufacture of steel autoclaves, pressure vessels, and other related products in conformance with stringent ASME standards. Our steam sterilizers offer operational flexibility and are integrated with unique safety features that allow us to meet stringent performance requirements. Autoclave sterilizers are available with our proprietary Harris quick-opening doors. A highly desirable feature of our sterilizer equipment is the vacuum system. When incorporated into the design, the vacuum system adds a vacuum cycle at the beginning and end of the sterilization cycle. The initial vacuum cycle, or "pre-vacuum", is provided to remove all air prior to steam filling. Since air is a good insulator, this is beneficial and produces quicker and thorough penetration of the steam. After the pre-vacuum cycle, steam is back-filled into the chamber and the cycle proceeds as usual. Upon completion of the steam exhausting, or completion of the traditional sterilizing cycle, a "post-vacuum" cycle is initiated. This cycle is used to remove moisture from the waste products and odor from the chamber. We fabricate complete sterilizers that comply with the exact requirements of the end user. Each system is unique and special attention paid in the preliminary design stages to assure complete satisfaction of operation and maintainability. Our steam sterilizers are proven and reliable options for the treatment, handling, and disposal of medical waste.Encapsulated blower motor eliminates the high maintenance necessary for through the vessel shaft sealing.Proprietary blower motor design allows operation at any combination of pressure and temperature.Engineered circulating fan assures excellent heat transfer to the load and exceptional temperature uniformity.Proprietary method of placing and securing insulation minimizes heat loss through the pressure vessel and minimizes operating costs.Location of typical electrical heating unit is shielded by cooling coil to prevent radiant heating of load.Cooling coil is a single pass heat exchanger designed for precise temperature control with ample provisions for thermal expansion to minimize thermally induced stresses and failure."Man-Inside" emergency alarm cables are provided on larger autoclaves which allows operator to completely disable all autoclave sub-systems. It requires autoclave door to be opened to reset the alarm.Load track and floor is designed to allow for thermal expansion yet provide full structural support.ASME approved safety relief valve and rupture disc are provided on separate vessel penetrations to assure independent and safe operation. Many other redundant safeties are incorporated to assure operator and equipment protection. Most vessel penetrations, such as vacuum, thermocouple and cooling are built into removable and replaceable ANSI flanges. This allows easy modification or repairs without compromising the structural integrity of the vessel.

Harris Quick Opening Doors

  • Design Pressure Up to 3000 psig
  • Diameter Up to 18 ft
  • Door Materials Carbon Steel SS Wetted Stainless Steel
he Harris Quick Opening Door, a proprietary design from Melco Steel, Inc., is commonly used in different types of autoclave systems. Originally developed and patented by Harris Products in the 1950's, its rights were later transferred to Melco Steel, Inc. Over the years, the design of our breech, lock-type doors have been enhanced and refined to offer safe and reliable autoclave operations. While the other types of closures actually rotate the door against the sealo-ring, the Harris design operates by rotating the locking ring a few degrees to expose the door lugs through cut out areas of the lock ring. Their unique design does not produce any relative motion between the door and the pressure sealing o-ring, eliminating early fatigue and the need for replacement. The door is then simply pivoted 90 to allow full access to the interiors. The lock ring and door swing operations of our Harris doors are typically hydraulic and always interlocked to prevent operation under high-pressures. They also come with door safety interlock devices, such as mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical interlocks to prevent inadvertent opening of the door under pressure. The safety features comply with stringent ASME requirements.
