Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding

VARTM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) or Liquid Resin Infusion is a composite manufacturing process in which the dry fibers are laid on the tool and vacuum sealed and the liquid resin is drawn through with a vacuum pump to create rotor wind blades. Liquid resin technology provides for lower cost and lower cure temperatures. Since the liquid resin techniques do not require curing cycles over 60C, the tooling for the blades is much easier to construct. Liquid resin infusion almost always forms a uniform composite of nearly ideal 65 percent fiberglass to 35 percent resin by weight.1310T RESIN FOR VARTMIn the Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) composite manufacturing process, dry fibers are laid on the tool and vacuum sealed while Rhino 1310T liquid resin and hardener are then drawn through with a vacuum pump.FEATURES AND BENEFITSIncreased flexibility and reduced process timeReduces installation time (eliminating heavy equipment)Fabrication of large scale composite structuresBetter control of glass to resin contentSmaller crew for laminationConsistent productionLess odor during curingUses simple toolingAPPLICATIONSManufacture wind energy rotor bladesManufacturer water crafts (power boats, jet ski's kayaks)Manufacturer sporting equipment (snow boards, tennis rackets, motorcycle helmets)

BioSeal Agricultural Sealants

BioSeal 2.0, BioSeal 3.0, BioSeal 6.0 and BioSeal 10.0 are closed cell, water blown spray polyurethane foam sealants that can be used in a variety of applications, from the farm to heavy industrial.BioSeal 2.0 has 3% bio-based content and 3% pre-consumer recycled content in the finished foam. BioSeal 3.0 has 16% bio-based content in the finished product. BioSeal 6.0 has 17% bio-based content in the finished product.AGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONSMost agricultural buildings do not perform like a residential or commercial structure. Instead they rely on inexpensive, or sometimes even natural, ventilation systems to force air through the building. Often times insulating an agricultural building is not as important as sealing it correctly. A building with leaks uses more energy and prevents proper air fl ow, thus making the entire building ineffi cient. In order to create a more efficient structure, installers seal the roof and sidewalls.Low density spray foams have been used in agricultural structures, but usually will not last in areas that are exposed to moisture, animals and heavy equipmentbasically everyday life on a farm. Instead, you need a denser, closed cell sealant that can endure daily wear and tear.BioSeal 2.0, BioSeal 3.0, BioSeal 6.0 and BioSeal 10.0 are dense foam sealants with tough, thick skins that adhere to most materials. They create a smooth, monolithic surface inside the building and seal it in a way that will stand up to the challenges of farm life. BENEFITS OF BIOSEAL SEALANTSHigh density sealants make it difficult for darkling beetles to penetrateProvides no food value for insectsStands up to high-pressure spray washesFormulated in black and white depending on the productReduces petroleum use by integrating renewable ingredients and by increasing building efficiencySpray applied using water instead of a chemical blowing agentSTUDIES SHOW POULTRY HOUSE RETROFITS SAVE MONEYA study conducted in 2006 by Auburn University documents the costs and returns of retrofitting a poultry house with spray foam sealants. Six Alabama test houses had curtain sidewalls treated with a 1-inch sprayed high-density polyurethane foam sealant:These houses realized a 35% savings in fuel costs in comparison to identical untreated housesAnnual fuel savings were 1, 850 gallons per house after treatmentHigh-to-low temperature differences in the treated houses are only 3 4 degrees compared to untreated houses that experience 7 8 degree differencesStatic pressure of the houses increased from 0.12 before treatment to an average of 0.27 after treatmentFurther advantages of this retrofi t application were seen in slight improvements in bird performance data over a 7 flock, one year period The R-value of the sidewalls increased from approximately R-1 to R-8 at the curtains. Above and below the curtains the R-values increased from R-2 to R-9.At prevailing propane prices ($1.39 per gallon) and grower pay rate ($0.05 per pound) the cost of retrofitting the structures was paid back within 10 12 flocks.

Infrastructure Composites

Rhino epoxy composites for infrastructure retrofit are used for seismic upgrade, blast protection and composite repair of conventional concreterebar structures that are failing. The infrastructure market segment has grown nearly 100% per year and now represents about 35% of non-wind epoxy sales. An added bonus in this market is that many of its existing epoxy clients can use Rhino Linings urethane formulations.1310T RESIN FOR COMPOSITE INFRASTRUCTURERhino 1310T epoxy composites are non-draining, 100% solids systems that provide maximum flexibility for a variety of reinforced composites. Whether performing fiberglass infrastructure reinforcement, seismic retrofits, or the repair of failing conventional concreterebar structures, Rhino 1310T forms a matrix in which carbon or glass fiber is saturated then woven together to add structural reinforcement. Rhino fiberglass infrastructure reinforcement and seismic retrofits last longer and incur a fraction of the cost and time it takes to achieve the same results using conventional materials and techniques. Carbon fiber wrap and blast mitigation solutions are currently being used in numerous concrete, masonry, steel, and wood structures to increase strength and durability.FEATURES AND BENEFITSFast wet-out of fiberglass reinforcements with minimal drainage from laminationGreater fatigue resistance, strength and reinforcementFlexible carbon fiber wrap conforms to any shapeLess weight and lower thermal expansionReduced installation timeAPPLICATIONSInfrastructure seismic upgardes (concrete beams, columns, pipes)Carbon fiber or glass filiment winding (pressure tanks, vessels)Fatigue resistant FRP manufactured partsComposite toolingBlast MitigationConstruction EquipmentBridges and piers Fuel tank sealersCURE SCHEDULEAllow the composite to cure at the recommended temperature as listed in the physical properties chart (above). In the case of all listed hardeners, allow at least 6-8 hours at ambient (>65F) or 2-3 hours at 130F before attempting to return the composite to service. In colder weather (less than 65F) allow additional time for the composite to cure. After the recommended elevated temperature cure, all systems may be exposed to the listed service temperatures. In all cases, an elevated temperature cure of 2-4 hours at 120F - 140F assures the highest quality end product.HARDENER RECOMMENDATIONSAll hardeners reach sufficient strength for return to service or demolding after an overnight ambient cure. The fastest Rhino hardener, Rhino 3102, is useful for winter applications, or for mixing in smaller batches. Rhino 3103 is the standard 30-minute system hardener used for 4:1 volume mixing applications. Rhino 3138 should be used in high temp applications (up to 240F) and is 4:1 by volume, which is also useful in hot weather or for large areas. Rhino 3191 is our standard 1 hour General Purpose hardener, and may be certified to NSF Standard 61 for potable water.Rhino 3136R-1 is used for composite tooling. Rhino hardeners, 3102, 3103 and 3191 are DOT not regulated DOT non-corrosive, minimizing hazardous materials shipping issues.

Sand or sweep blasting, by other means of mechanically abrading achieves the best bond. All freestanding water must be removed. General surface preparation and application procedures specified in ACI 503.1-4 should be followed.MIXINGA thorough and complete mix is important. Due to the gel consistency of Rhino 405, the use of a slow turning and heavy duty Jiffy or mixing paddle is recommended. Carefully proportion each component at the ratio of 2 parts A (yellow resin) to 1 part B (blue hardener) by volume and mix until a consistent light green color with no stripes or color variation visible in the mix. It is recommended that Rhino 405 be mixed in smaller batches, and used within 45 minutes from time of mix. Due to the products gel characteristics, the individual components should be conditioned to a controlled temperature between a minimum of 65F and a maximum of 90F for best results.HOW TO APPLY TIPSMixed material should be applied by trowel, squeegee or putty knife, and feathered at the edges to blend with existing sound concrete substrates.Temperature and humidity conditions affect the cure and tack free times of this material. Warm, dry conditions speed the cure and cool, damp conditions will lengthen the cure time. Each component should be stirred prior to mixing.
