Depicting the god Horus as a falcon, this well cast, and richly detailed falcon wears the Double Crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, fronted by the royal uraeus. The head has lidded oval eyes and a hooked beak. Thick, heavy ridges of the legs and rough skin of the talons contrast with the delicacy of the engraved feathering on the closed wings, uniting the power and majesty of the falcon. The falcon is centrally positioned on a rectangular sarcophagus, the narrow box tapering to a cavetto cornice, that originally housed either representative bones or the body of a small falcon.

MEDIEVAL CRUSADER KNIGHTLY SWORD

A classic sword from the Age of Chivalry, oft mentioned in poems, monuments and chronicle as Swerdes of Were, Grans Espees d Allemagne, and Schlacht Schwerte, that always indicated large size and specific purpose. Capable of being wielded in either both hands or one, this rare and exciting weapon was constructed from early steel and reserved for the field of battle. Hand forged, this superb fighting weapon has a flat, broad blade with shallow fuller down both sides terminating above the point. Fullers make the blade stronger and lighter for the knight to carry and was an effective weapon against mail armor. A strong blow from this sword would easily cut chainmail, while the sharp point was effective for stabbing. Due to the slightly longer blade with narrower fuller, this blade is classified as a sub-type Xa (Oakeshott) evolving from earlier Viking models, which in turn were influenced by the Roman-era Celtic swords. They were popularly depicted in illuminated manuscripts, especially during the Frankish Ottonian Period (9191024).

LARGE EGYPTIAN POLYCHROME

This two-piece ensemble of mummy cartonnage was placed over the body of the deceased once the process of mummification was complete. The upper cartonnage shows a large usekh or usejet collar (the word meaning wide), placed over the chest of the mummy. Semi-circular, it is made up of a network of bead rows in different shapes and materials, depicting petals of white lotus (in a tear-drop shape) and flowers in the form of rosettes and blue lotus flowers. Two falcon heads are placed above as terminals and in reference to the god Horus. Between the terminals is the winged image of the god Khepri, a live manifestation of Ra, the sun, when it is in the rising phase in the east and symbolizing continuous cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth. This was the base of the beliefs of the ancient Egyptians and for this reason was present in sarcophagi as a protective symbol.

BOEOTIAN TERRACOTTA PAPADES STATUETTE

Height: 25.5 cm (10 inches)

A handmade terracotta "Papades" statuette of a goddess, of flattened form standing with arms extended and wearing a long embroidered dress and high polos with central circular ornament indicating her status as a goddess. Such Boeotian plank figurines were dubbed 'Papades' or 'priests' (Greek ), by the Boeotian villagers, who were the first to find them in their fields. Many examples were excavated in Tanagra and Rhitsona in the 19th century. The interpretation of this type of figurine is difficult. Their frequent presence in graves permits the hypothesis that they were linked with the worship of the chthonic deities Demeter and Kore, goddesses related to fecundity and the harvest. Another theory is they represent in clay the "daidala", - wooden effigies dressed as brides - which, according to ancient literary sources were used in rituals on Mt Kithairon in Boeotia, to honour Hera, the wife of Zeus and patron goddess of marriage.

Vessels such as this example were highly prized in antiquity and were probably used to store valuable and exotic perfumed oils or ointments.

This rare bluegreen faience cartouche pendant carries the raised inscription Seti Merenptah ie: " Seti, beloved of Ptah" the nomen (birth name) for Seti I. Originally part of a broad collar, it is now strung on a necklace of blue cylindrical and spherical faience beads. Seti I was the father of perhaps Egypt's greatest rulers, Ramesses II, and was in his own right also a great leader. His birth name is Seti Mery-en-ptah, meaning 'He of the god Seth, beloved of Ptah.To the Greeks, he was Sethos I, and his throne name was Men-maat-re, meaning 'Eternal is the Justice of Re'.He ruled Egypt for 13 years (though some Egyptologists differ on this matter, giving him a reign of between 15 and 20 years) from 1291 through 1278 BC. In order to rectify the instability under the Amarna kings, he early on set a policy of major building at home and a committed foreign policy.

A small alabaster dish with a rectangular rim, circular bowl, square bottom, two engraved lines running around the rim, and decorative cuts along the edges of the exterior. Background: As clay was the most abundant material found in the Mesopotamian valley, stone was mostly imported due to its rarity in the area. Alabaster, gypsum, lapis lazuli, limestone and marble were the most popular stones to import. Sumerians traded crops grown from their fertile soil for the stone, as well as metal and wood. The growth of cities and powerful ruling families led to a demand for luxury items, especially objects made from stone that were mainly used in temples and tombs such as the famous Royal Graves at Ur (ca. 2500 BC).The amount of time and effort that went into making stone vessels gave them a much greater value as well, as they lasted longer than vessel made from clay.
