Summit coffee

In support of the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets project, we’re excited to make Buzz Blend available as a limited-time offering to help end malaria. For each bag sold, Summit will donate $10 directly to Nothing But Nets, which fully funds one bed net delivered to a family in need in sub-Saharan Africa. The coffee we sourced for this project is from Kenya, one of Nothing But Nets’ focus countries for 2017. Specifically, this single-origin roast is from Ragati wet mill, located in Kirinyaga county on the southern slopes of ice peaked Mt. Kenya, and draws fresh water from the swift flowing Ragati river to process its coffee. Roughly 800 smallholder farmers deliver to Ragati factory, one of 9 factories comprising Kibirigwi Farmers Co-operative Society. This plot grows at roughly 1, 700 meters ASL in red, volcanic soils rich in organic matter.

This Benchmark Series offering comes from one of our favorite regions in the world: Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia. We love the highest grade coffees from Yirgacheffe for their black tea and lemon notes, and this particular harvest from the Bonde Mill in the Kochere neighborhood stood out to us for its dynamic top flavor notes as well: lime, black tea, mango and graham cracker. We source this coffee in partnership with Keffa Coffee, whose on-the-ground buying team in Ethiopia ensures zero defects. To accomplish this, the coffee is rigorously sorted in a process that includes mechanical sorting by size and density, then careful hand sorting that takes three times longer than conventional coffee. Meticulous processing results in clean, intense flavors. To show appreciation for this work, Keffa pays sorters twice the average wage and keeps wages timely and consistent despite a fluctuating coffee market. Workers say the extra income helps them support their communities and send their children to school, highlighting the importance of specialty coffee premiums and direct trading practices.

From the Chapadas de Minas region comes our first ever Benchmark Series from Brazil. It is a small and beautiful region full of stunning topography. Farmer Ricardo Tavares is an innovative coffee farmer producing and supporting new coffee practices. We were surprised and impressed by how sweet and fruity this coffee was for a low altitude Brazil, and our importer partners at Ally Coffee have done a great job sourcing high quality coffees from this country.

Taking the bad rap that Decaf coffees get and swinging that around, we landed on Decaf Summit House. Smoother and more dynamic than most decaffeinated coffees, Decaf House always offers a solid cup with notes of apple, bittersweet chocolate and baking spices. At present, Decaf Summit House is a single-origin coffee from Valle del Alto Huallaga, Peru, decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process method.

Removing Decaf coffee’s bad rap, our benchmark Decaf Gayo Mandiri is smoother and more dynamic than most decaffeinated coffees. Offering an approachable and solid cup with notes of praline, peach, baking spice, cranberry.
