Chrysanthemum Cameo Embroidered Quilt

  • Size 22-1/2" X 25-1/2"
This little machine-embroidered quilt is made with a lot of left-overs! The single mum machine-embroidery design is the motif I used in "Plum Mums"; the central cameo fabric is left over from "David's 21st Birthday Quilt"; the peach fabric used for the cabled bias applique was left over from "Tulips and Twists"; and the little purple free-standing lace flowers are left over from "It's All Thread!", as is all of the thread used in the embroidery. Like almost all my quilts these days, I made a free-standing lace border, embroidered on water-soluble stabilizer. All machine embroidery designs are from Zundt Designs.

Plum Mums Quilt

  • Size 83” x 84”
I didnt think I was ever going to finish this quilt! Machine problems, bleeding problems, running out of stabilizer, running out of thread, un-sewing densely stitched machine embroidery But Im pleased with the final results! The plum oriental chrysanthemum print was the starting point. The nine large center blocks feature interlaced shaped lace insertion and bias linen strips, pinstitched to batiste, then layered over a plum blender fabric. The floral fabric forms appliqud sashing. Two borders of a total of 144 machine embroidered plum mums (Zundt designs) are edged with green piping. Between the two embroidered borders is an interlaced cable border echoing the central blocks, also with an appliqud floral border. Tiny decorative machine stitching with variegated thread outlines all the appliqud borders. Then, every bit of open space was machine quilted with feathers, teardrops, and tiny stippling. Machine embellished, appliqud, embroidered, and quilted. This quilt was juried into the 2006 AQS Nashville show and the 2006 Houston IQA show. It was awarded first place in Mixed Techniques and Viewer's Choice at the 2007 Little Balkans Quilt Festival.

Argentum Quilt

  • Size 16.5" x 16.5"
  • wide 1/8
"Argentum" is the Latin word for silver, so I thought that was an appropriate name for this silver miniature! Silkcotton Radiance, silver metallic thread for the machine embroidery (Zundt), and Superior Kimono thread for quilting. The tiny, hand-appliqued bias tubes are about 18" wide; the parallel quilted lines are about 1.5mm apart.

Misty Garden Quilt

  • Size 34” x 34”
Transparent organza reverse appliqu is combined with turned edge handkerchief linen appliqu on batiste. The appliqu and reverse appliqu were applied to cotton batiste and stitched with a machine pinstitch and a large needle to create a row of very tiny holes along the stitching line. These batiste pieces were layered over floral fabric. The transparent organza, semi-sheer batiste, and opaque linen create varying transparencies over the print fabric. Pieced sashing and borders frame the batiste blocks and border. This quilt with instructions was featured in the July 2008 issue of American Quilter magazine. Machine appliqud, pieced, and quilted.

Birthday Quilt

  • Size 38” x 34”
My daughter, Annie, turned 21 on Feb. 22, 2004. She was an art major in college. This quilt is almost an exact copy of a painting assignment she did for a design class, based on Johannes Ittens color star. I loved her design, but couldnt have the painting to work from, so I had to do it from memory! The quilt top was pieced from fabric I hand-painted. For the quilt back, I traced down significant people from her life, sent squares of fabric and indelible pens to them, and asked them to write letters to her. I pieced these letters together for the back. Included are most of her best friends from pre-school through high school; her grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousins, brother, stepfather, and, of course, Mom; a beloved neighbor from a previous town; her fourth-grade teacher and high school Japanese teacher; her wonderful college mentor; and even her dog and cat (they told me what to write!) The quilt was a great success! Machine pieced and quilted.

Distraction Quilt

  • Size 33" x 39.5"
This quilt is obviously very different than my usual symmetrical designs. I pieced white and gray Kona cotton to form intersecting stripes of varying widths, with just a few tiny violet pieces along the top. Then, I embroidered the pieced top with Zundt designs. I wanted to show the transparency of parts of the designs - you can see the pieced fabric through the silver metallic-thread portions of the embroidery. I think my favorite part of this quilt is the binding pieced to continue the stripes!
