Sealing Concept A large variety of the most difficult sealing problems can be solved using VITAFLEX spiral wound gaskets. Although its basic fundamental principle has little changed since its creation, production techniques and materials used developed over the last 30 years have enabled our gaskets to be adapted to a much broader range of applications.Research and Development Extensive research and development programs on the VITAFLEX spiral-wound gasket have enabled the essential parameters relating to the performance of the gasket to be mastered. This is particularly the case for the profile of the metal strip, choice of material, filler quality, gasket compactness, compressive force and seating pressure. We can offer optimized gaskets perfectly adapted to our customers specific requirements including operating conditions, sealing, dimensioning of assemblies and safety level.Operating principle The VITAFLEX; spiral-wound gasket operates by the axial compression of the winding, which results in the plastic deformation of the filler material on the sealing faces. The metal strip optimized profile provides elastic recovery, a vital function in order to maintain sealing on a bolted assembly.Description The winding, or the active part of the gasket, consists of an alternating combination of formed metal strip and soft filler material wound together. The soft filler material is selected to suit the medium which is to be sealed off (pressure, temperature, fluid). Replacing labyrinth seals with brush seals from Technetics Group can reduce leakage by 5 to 17 times, thus providing significant turbomachinery efficiency and output gains.Brush seals work by absorbing the radial deflections between the shaft and rotor during transient operation. The seal then follows the rotor back to the steady state operating position to maintain minimum leakage. The brush pack is composed of thousands of finely packed 70 to 150 micron diameter wire bristles. The bristle material, a cobalt or nickel alloy, is selected to provide an optimal combination of wear properties and oxidation resistance. The backplates and sideplates are typically fabricated from stainless steel or nickel alloys. The primary consideration is thermal expansion and contraction of the case material.Technetics Group can manufacture brush seals from 2 inches to 110 inches in diameter. Brush seals can be delivered as a single unit or in multiple segments. The bristles can be configured radially inward, radially outward or axially.

Unlike flexible graphite cut gaskets, the compression of the ORIGRAF die-formed seal is limited by a mechanical stop: groove or inner andor outer ring.
