Waterborne Coatings

Due to health risks and environmental considerations involved in the use of solvent-based lacquers, much work has gone in to the development of water-based lacquers. Such lacquers are considerably less toxic and more environmentally friendly, and in many cases, produce acceptable results. More and more water-based colored lacquers are replacing solvent-based clear and colored lacquers in underhood and interior applications in the automobile and other similar industrial applications. Water based lacquers are used extensively in wood furniture finishing as well Waterborne technology has advanced significantly in recent years. Wurdack stays ahead of the competition through a commitment to investing in laboratory time and comprehensive testing of the newest raw materials, often before they become commercially available. Through these efforts Wurdack has established itself as a company attentive to the evaluation and testing of new products for our clients. Waterborne systems are those systems which are thinned or cleaned up with water or which contain water as an active component. These include acrylic lacquers, polyurethanes, enamels, and epoxies as well as latex coatings. They can be air-dry or baked systems, single or two-component.

Enamel Coatings

An enamel paint is a paint that air dries to a hard, usually glossy, finish. In reality, most commercially-available enamel paints are significantly softer than either vitreous enamel or stoved synthetic resins. Some enamel paints have been made by adding varnish to oil-based paint. The term sometimes refers to oil-modified polyesters that were introduced in the early 1930s. The oil is required to stop or enhance the crosslinking of the paint in order to achieve sufficient flexibility of the paint film. Typically the term "enamel paint" is used to describe oil-based covering products, usually with a significant amount of gloss in them, however recently many latex or water-based paints have adopted the term as well. The term today means "hard surfaced paint" and usually is in reference to paint brands of higher quality, floor coatings of a high gloss finish, or spray paints. Enamels are thermosets based on oils and fatty acids. They exhibit a broad range of properties. They are used on everything from wood doors to metal. Baking enamels are amino resins with increased chemical, UV, and abrasion resistance over their air-dry cousins. They are very durable finishes primarily used on metals. SPECIAL PURPOSE COATINGS

Sometimes a coating with a "special effect" is in order. These effects span the range from metallics, irridescents, transparents, fluorescents or phosphoresents. If you want your coating to sparkle, shine, or glow, we can put the package together to get the effect you want. Texture is another desired effect. Whether a wrinkle, soft touch, non-skid, or spatter effect is requested, Wurdack has experience in formulating these effects creating quality coatings for our clients. Multi-color, crackle, and spatter finishes with a variety of effects may be developed for any application. Some coatings require a specialized purpose, as an insulator, as a conductive coating, or as a tie-coat between two differing surfaces. These products can all be designed from the ground up for your specific needs. When that coating needs a bit of give, elastomeric coatings for a variety of functions are also in our skill set. Some purposes such as specific types of reflectance, weather o

GREEN COATINGS

For over two decades Wurdack has recognized the need to produce coatings that are more earth-friendly. For new customers this is always the starting point in the evaluation of potiential coatings systems. For existing coatings it continues to be a priority to guide our customers to newer technology that has a more benign effect on the earth. Back in the beginning the technology was a bit behind the times, as the demand had not reached the level to drive research and development, but those times have changed. With more and more companies jumping on the "green" bandwagon, the options and quality of choices have truly expanded. Additional benefits of such coatings include reduced insurance cost and an added marketing benefit to the end product. Doing well by doing good is a great goal regardless of its effect on the bottom line. Let us help in this effort, and in all probability even the bottom line will be enhanced.

Functional Coatings

At Wurdack we know that the coatings can provide more than just a pretty face. The coatings need to look good, of course, but they also serve a purpose. Often simply protecting the substrate is not enough. Whether it is fire resistance, fire retardance, conductiivity, high-temperature resistant or cryongenic, we have the expertise to develop exactly the coating required. We have worked on a variety of functional coatings over the years and the list below is just a sample of our capalilities.
