A sector gear is a gear that has teeth along a short section of its circumference. The remaining portion of the gear is smooth without any teeth. Sector gears are used in applications when less than 360 degrees of rotations is required. In the areas where there are no gear teeth, the material can be removed. This can reduce weight and supply clearance. A typical application would be a valve actuator that only requires 90 degrees to open or close. Aircraft radar also would utilize this type of gear as it would only scan forward of the plans. An X-ray machine also uses dual sector gears. A spline is a series of teeth (splines) on a drive shaft that mesh with grooves in a mating gear. The surfaces of the two, the spline & the meshed gear, allow smooth transfer of force along a straight line of contact. Our worms are available in coarse and fine pitches. Outside diameters range up to 6 inches and worm lengths range up to 12 inches. Avon can reverse engineer a worm or worm gear set when necessary. Worm drives can help decrease speed and allow higher torque to be transmitted. A gearbox using worms and worm gears will be more compact than one made from most other gear options.
