With heavy transfer paper there is less opportunity for wrinkling, tearing, and fly aways, and less disruption of patterns or prints during the application process. Carbon braid is most commonly used in the fabrication process of custom definitive sockets for upper and lower limb prosthetics. Carbon braid allows the patient to have a lightweight yet rigid socket frame. When a technician fabricates a carbon frame he employs a hand lamination process of manually saturating the carbon braid with a hardening resin. Carbon braid is commonly available in weights of 12K standard, 6K lightweight, and 3K ultra lightweight.

Volara is a closed cell EVA copolymer foam that is used to line the inside of braces to give greater comfort to the patient. Volara can be assembled to plastic devices using adhesives or it can be formed around a positive casting and then rigid plastic sheet can be formed around the Volara to create a direct bond between the foam and the plastic. Volara is available in a low density, low stiffness grade (four pounds per cubic foot) and a high density, high stiffness grade (ten pounds per cubic foot).

PTFE glass fabric tapes are used for heat sealing and roller wrap applications. Along with good heat resistance, they also possess excellent electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. PTFE tapes are available with a silicone adhesive backing. Acrylic adhesive backing is available upon request.
