Sculptures

Bird in the Hand showcases the dedication found in modern relationships. The figures in this sculpture combine strong, humble, masculine support with a carefree, feminine, flight of fancy. It is a story of commitment, as the grace of the ballerina is elevated and exalted through the support of her steadfast partner. It is as if she can fly forever.

Cross My Heart truly exhibits the depth and beauty of Martins sculpting talent. The woman in flight across her partners chest can only land safely and gracefully with his support. The sculpture asks her question, Do you promise? The title of the sculpture, Cross My Heart, answers her question for us.

Dance of Yes and No is composed of two dancing figures, male and female, or He and She. Like relationships, these sculptures change their meanings and messages as we shift our point of view. As their bases rotate, the couple's interaction shifts from surrender to defense, acceptance to denial, and commintment to abandonment.

Dancing With the Devil depicts a man and woman, costumed as an angel and devil, caught in mid-stride at the moment before their hands meet. The grace of the couple's movement is similar to ballet. Dancing With the Devil examines the conflicted emotions of sudden desire and forbidden love.

Whirlwind features a couple joining hands engaging in an ecstatic pirouette. The dynamic nature of this composition demands to be experienced from all sides. There is a vital balance maintained by the pair, it seems that if either one lets go, both partners will fall apart.

Gaias Breath is the personification of earth. She embodies the rebirthing force that links the fading past with the dawning future. From an old and tired Earth, Gaia, the goddess mother of our planet, emerges. Poised above the environmentally exhausted sphere she breathes life into a virgin Earth. A progression of generations can be seen in that the dying Earth is the grandmother, the figure is the mother, and the re-born Earth is the daughter. In this sculpture we see the clearest illustration of Eichingers belief that women play an essential role in the nurturing of our planet, a process desperately needed in order to return the Earth to a healthy state.
