A needle roller bearing is a type of anti-friction bearing that uses a rolling element to facilitate movement. Like a ball bearing, it has an inner and outer race with a rollers in between. What makes a needle bearing unique is how it uses very small rollers compared to the larger rollers found in bigger roller bearings. This allows the bearing to have a much slimmer cross section, making them ideal for applications where a much more compact bearing is needed. There is also more surface area than that of a standard ball bearing, giving them excellent load handling capability. Although needle bearings are available with inner races, depending on the application the inner race can be discarded and the rollers can make direct contact with the rotating shaft.
