Industrial V-belts are the most widely used belts for power transmission. They get their name
from their wedge-shaped design. The sheaves, or pulleys, that these belts drive have the same
wedge shape that helps keep the belt secure. V belts have become the optimum choice for nonsynchronous
industrial applications thanks to their flexibility, speed, torque rating, and long
service life. Modern V-belts have a premium wrap that protects the belts from oils and
chemicals, which prevents slipping and prolongs the life of the belt. The inner surface of V-belts
can be smooth or cogged. Cogged V-belts are most commonly used on air-handling equipment
that uses small diameter pulleys. The cogged design allows for the belt to flex more easily while
moving on the pulley, reducing stress on the belt.
